#3 of 9 in Museums in Shreveport
The Shreveport Water Works Museum tells the story of Shreveport's early efforts to create a source of clean water for the city. It houses what is believed to be the oldest intact collection of Victorian era waterworks equipment, offering a fascinating look into the past, into industrial equipment and engineering and the importance of clean water. Originally called the McNeill Street Pumping Station (because it was formerly accessed via McNeill Street) , it is designated a "National Historic Landmark." The McNeill Street Pumping Station Preservation Society (MSPSPS), established in 1999, serves as the "friends" organization for the museum and is currently funding, managing and running the facility. The facility is available for events on a rental basis, regular daily admission is free.

  • I learned a lot and pleasantly surprised by the history of this little known unassuming place. Very interesting, free and something different to learn about. Bring kids and learn together.  more »

  • Very interesting self-guide style tour. Both the train and water works museum had interesting artifacts and educational items. If you like getting close to and seeing how the equipment use to work, you have to visit. No admittance fee but strongly suggest donations.
  • This place was so cool. So much history and information. Our tour guide was very knowledgeable. There is also a really cool train museum/room next to here.
  • Super cool! Kevin gave our family a detailed tour and even let the kids blow the steam whistle at the end. Fantastic hidden treasure in Shreveport!!
  • I was totally surprised. The outside does not look like much, but inside is a wealth of historic steam powered machinery. All of it was left just as it was when taken out of service. The staff was very knowledgeable about the history and use of each piece. There were boilers, steam engines, pumps, etc. All are very large. If you like historic machines, you will like this place.
  • McNeil Street Pumping Station houses the Shreveport Water Works Museum. It's worth a visit. Museum is free. They have tours but you can walk through at your own pace. Open in 1887 as Shreveport's first water plant. Contains a machine shop, boiler room, pump room, filter room and some exhibits outside.
