  • This waterfall is usually full unless it's been extremely dry for weeks without rain. The hike isn't too rough but it is completely down then back up for about 1½ miles each way, so be prepared for it if you aren't used to hiking. The trail conditions are excellent though so you can do it in sneakers without issue. There's a lovely little swimming hole at the base of the first falls but the water is always super cold, even in the sweltering heat of August. Overall a great short hike to bring lunch or just take a pit stop if you're hiking the loop to Dark Hollow Falls. I took this photo a few years ago when there was average water flow.
  • It is a tough hike to the rose river falls from skyline drive. It is a loop, and you get to see three waterfalls.. dark hollow is easy, accessible via the rose river fire road, but to go further on into the rose river falls the hike is steep and rocky most of the way.
  • Worth the not so long walking. The way back is climbing.
  • Easy hike with wide path covered in tall trees.
  • Challenging for a novice, but worth the effort!

Where to stay in Shenandoah National Park

All developed accommodation in Shenandoah National Park lies on or near Skyline Drive. The park offers one lodge, one resort, and one set of cabins, all of which a private concessionaire operates. With 179 rooms, rustic cabins, multi-unit lodges, and modern suites, Skyland Resort provides the most places to turn in for the night. You can also choose one of four campgrounds, all of which remain open through spring, summer, and fall. Of these, only Matthews Campground accepts reservations; if you plan to visit the park on a summer or fall weekend, arrive early at the other campgrounds to grab a site. Plenty of inns, bed and breakfasts, resorts, motels, and hotels surround the park. Stay in the nearby college town of Harrisonburg if you're looking for a lively nighttime setting.
