Shelburne Farms, Shelburne

Must see · Historic Site · Educational Site
Nestled on the shores of Lake Champlain, Shelburne Farms remains a great place to spend some quality family time in the countryside, petting goats and rabbits, watching cheddar cheese being made, and learning about sustainable living. This nonprofit organization is set on a historic working farm that dates back to 1886, and represents an excellent example of a Gilded Age "ornamental farm." Enjoy more than 16 km (10 mi) of walking trails, take the tour of lush garden followed by afternoon tea and cookies, or ride on an open-air truck-pulled wagon through the historic landscape. Children will love the opportunity to collect eggs or milk cows by hand. Make Shelburne Farms a centerpiece of your Shelburne vacation itinerary, and find what else is worth visiting using our Shelburne road trip app.

  • Due to covid, buildings were not open. But, we were welcome to wander the hiking paths. Staff provided a good map of the paths; several of the paths are suitable for strollers. Beautiful scenery.  more »
  • What a lovely place to walk. Due to Covid none of the buildings were open unfortunately. Enjoyed it just the same  more »
  • I'm so happy that we had time to spend a few hours walking around Shelburne Farms! The trails were very walkable and the views were spectacular! I only wish we'd had more time to explore all of the...  more »
  • Shelburne Farms is magical. First of all, it's pretty cheap to get in. It's less than $10 per person to spend an entire day here. Once you get your ticket, you can walk to the farm or get transported by a tractor. Since the property is HUGE, I'd wait to be transported. Once you're at the massive historic farm that looks more like a castle, you'll be entertained for hours. They have chickens, rabbits, cows, donkeys, horses, many animals that you can pet. They have programming throughout the day. Our daughter loved the chicken egg hunting! There's a farm-to-table food truck there every day serving burgers, sandwiches, etc. In the back of the property is the inn, which is beautiful. There's a general store at the entrance/exit that sells jams, honey, and cheese. THE CHEESE! It is AMAZING! Eat all the free samples plus more.
  • Very friendly staff, an amazing place for young kids. Lots of animals - sheep, chickens, turkey, rabbit and few more. We saw cow milking, which was a new experience. Cheese factory tour was knowledge
  • Our experience was unfriendly. We here some good things about this place and the experience. The grounds were well kept. The last at the ticket booth was not very friendly or helpful. I realized she probably was asked there same questions all day and they had signs with all the information but she was grumpy. Maybe she was just having a bad morning as it was only about 10 after opening. Any how went into the visitors center and while more helpful not to us but others, they too were very short with the answers or comments. We decided not to take this experience hoping to be able to come back at a later time and maybe have everyone in a better mood. There was plenty of parking and the cost seemed to range from$8 to $14 depending on what you wanted too do. There was a cost too enter the grounds. Dogs are not allowed. There were no student discounts at the farms but there are huge discounts at the museum.
  • I absolutely love this place. The trails are amazing to walk, the food at the inn is delicious, and the environment at the farm barn is so fun. I have taken a number of out of town family members here and frequently take my 3 year old and he doesn't seem to get tired of it. There is also food at the farmbarn, the bakery is good, though sometimes the bottoms of the cookies get a little burnt, and the farm cart is tasty though expensive. There are amazing places to plan to have a picnic all over the property.
  • Absolutely gorgeous. Beautiful views everywhere. Obvious that there is much care into the maintenance of this vast property. What a wonderful place. I look forward to returning next year.
