  • We so enjoyed our walk on the spit. We did not go the full 11 mile roundtrip to the lighthouse as we didn't have time. We went half way and had to turn back, but were thankful we got to experience wal...  more »
  • It is a 5 1/2 mile walk to the Lighthouse on the Spit. It is a National Wildlife Refuge, so no dogs are allowed in order to protect the wildlife. You can join the New Dungeness Lighthouse Association ...  more »
  • I followed signs from Highway 101 to the Dungeness Wildlife Refuge. I spoke with a volunteer/forest ranger and gathered a tremendous amount of information. I learned that the walk is 5.5 miles. It fee...  more »

  • This is a great place to hike to for a day. There is a small fee to get a permit to hike on the wildlife refuge; they honor national park passes and it waives the fee. There is a public restroom in the parking lot before the trail begins. This is just under 11 miles round trip. There is a public bathroom at the lighthouse. The trail is on a beach with a lot of drift wood and plenty of rocks to go around. I highly suggest timing the hike at low tide and start earlier. The lighthouse is open 9-5, but the trail is a 6AM-dark kind of thing. As I walked back, the tide was coming in and it took away a huge chunk of comfortable walking space on the sandy part of the spit, and I found myself walking on the bigger rocks/driftwood more towards the end of the journey. Everyone on the trail is incredibly friendly, I didn't see younger children past a certain point on the trail. The lighthouse is great. You can climb to the top, they have a small museum that's pretty informative. There are a bunch of picnic benches outside. Other than a public restroom, there is no gift shop or offering of refreshments. Pack snacks, water, lunch. There are no trash cans, either. You must bring your trash back with you because of the minimal service that goes out there. There are great views out there. Olympic mountain range, bits of Canada, etc.
  • Getting here requires you to hike five miles out along the Dungness Spit. You will see several different birds that nest and feed on the spit. Maybe spot a whale along the way. The lighthouse has a history that makes the walk worth the effort. Pay attention to the tide schedule avaliable at the trail entrance, just ask a volunteer. Also the only restrooms are at the parking lot.
  • The arduous beach hike is well worth the view from the top of this lighthouse. You can see the Olympics behind you and Victoria across the Strait. The lighthouse is staffed year round by rotating volunteers. Ours were friendly and knowledgable.
  • Great sunset view! #iloveitontop
  • It was a long hike, but worth it. We timed our trip to go during low tide and had plenty of beach to walk on. Enjoyed the ocean view and some wildlife along the way. The lighthouse was fun and offers tours- we were able to go to the top and enjoy the view.
