Fremont Troll, Seattle

#9 of 31 in Sightseeing in Seattle
Monument Tourist Spot
One of Seattle's more unusual tourist attractions, Fremont Troll hides out under the Aurora Bridge. The giant stone sculpture of a troll eating a full-size Volkswagen Beetle was created by a team of local artists led by sculptor Steve Badanes. The mixed-media artwork is made of rebar steel, wire, and reinforced concrete. Though you can have your picture taken standing next to the sculpture, you can also climb on top of it and take a look at its one good eye, made from an ordinary hubcap. Fremont Troll is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our world travel planner, Seattle Edition.

Where to stay in Seattle

Famous for its architecture, Seattle's downtown area features a range of lodging options, including high-end hotels offering expensive rooms with views over Elliott Bay. Remember that despite their prices, many hotels in this waterfront district provide rather small rooms. If you need more space but don't want to break the bank, head out of downtown to some of the city's outlying neighborhoods. Seattle's diverse suburbs offer affordable bed and breakfasts, providing you with all the comforts of home and allowing you to see what local life is really like.

  • The troll is a cool thing to check out .. if you have an extra 20 minutes. After that, you'll be done but so close to the Fremont Brewery that you'll have better things to do.  more »
  • If you know your fairy tales, you know of one in particular involving a troll under the bridge (Three Billy Goats Gruff). This, apparently, would be the inspiration for this massive concrete monument ...  more »
  • Pretty cool piece of artwork to climb around on, but hearing the story behind it was something else!  more »

  • Worth stopping to see if you're in the area, but might not go out of my way to see it. Fun to take a few photos and watch kids (and some adults) climb around on it. Turn around and check out the cool view of the Aurora bridge from this vantage point.
  • A really cool attraction. Very creative! Its holding a real beetle in its hand so keep an eye on your car, don't get too close
  • It's something unique & different than most all "quick photo opp stops" a must see if you are in the Fremont area! The neighborhood is nice so no worries there, streets are small & on street parking makes them feel even smaller if you are in a full size SUV or truck but still navigable. Nice weather brings lots of people so getting a pic of your family alone with the troll may take some time & patience however people are generally aware of who was there first & it creates an order of sorts. Again it's a must see local attraction if you are in the area, if warm weather I'd plan to spend up to an hour total atleast(finding parking, the walk to troll & back to car + pic wait time & exploring around the troll) but you could be in & out of the area in as little as 10 min as well.
  • A quirky roadside stop in Seattle. Shame about all the tour busses dropping their masses of people off! At least everyone is reasonably considerate letting other people take their photos.
  • When I found this online, I knew I had to see it! It's very cool to look at and take pictures with. It's a little ways away from other tourist sites and there's not a whole lot else to do once you see the troll. But I enjoyed it.
