  • Our last stop before leaving Seattle and it did not disappoint. Plenty of picnic tables up the hill and a few down closer to the water. Saw a few walking trails but didn’t have much time to explore. G...  more »
  • On the 4th of July my family came to this park around 11:30am for a hike. We brought our dog (labrador) and hiked from the first parking lot down to the beach end. The park is actually small compared ...  more »
  • We walked around a couple of the trails, which were beautiful and very enjoyable. We then headed down to the beach. It was really magical to be sitting on the beach with a temperature of 25c gazing at...  more »

  • Carkeek is one of the best spots in Seattle. Yes, there is a beach. Yes, there is a cool overlook and a playground and lots of room for picnics and gatherings. And! Don't forget, there are a ton of trails. I didn't discover these for a few years after I started going to Carkeek. But there are so fun. You feel like you are not in the city. Perhaps steer clear of the park and trails after dark - it is not uncommon to find the remnants of homeless camps there.
  • These are my favorite running trails in the city and some of the uphill climbs are pretty challenging. Particularly along the North and South bluffs overlooking the Puget Sound. I always bring my dog with me and we can easily do 4 or 5 miles and climb over 1000ft and still not have hit every trail. The only downside to Carkeek is the trails can get pretty crowded on nice summer days, or on holidays even in the middle of the winter, and I'll constantly have to slow down or walk to get around large groups of families and kids. The beach is pretty sweet too, but very rocky.
  • A lovely park that has lots of parking and is surprisingly big - it reminded me a little of Discovery Park in terms of size and layout. We visited in early December, which was just the right time to catch the salmon spawning season. We saw lots of salmon traveling up the creek, and there were several informational booths and plaques posted by the water about the salmon spawning process. This would be a great place to take your kids for a fun and educational experience. The waterfront area is also beautiful, with a large balcony area overlooking the train tracks and the bay.
  • We visited on salmon fest day in mid November. There were large Chum salmon in the river and there were numerous large fish. We saw some that were dead after spawning, but most were swimming and mating. Great place to take the kids out for a memorable experience. I had my dog who is not very well behaved, but because the trails are well laid out the dog could not get after the salmon.
  • Had a great day with our grandson at Carkeek Park. Saw two freight trains pass below us on the pedestrian bridge and went exploring on the beach. Later we flew airplane gliders on the grass field. View of the snow capped mountains were spectacular!

Where to stay in Seattle

Famous for its architecture, Seattle's downtown area features a range of lodging options, including high-end hotels offering expensive rooms with views over Elliott Bay. Remember that despite their prices, many hotels in this waterfront district provide rather small rooms. If you need more space but don't want to break the bank, head out of downtown to some of the city's outlying neighborhoods. Seattle's diverse suburbs offer affordable bed and breakfasts, providing you with all the comforts of home and allowing you to see what local life is really like.
