Benaroya Hall is the home of the Seattle Symphony in Downtown Seattle, Washington, United States. It features two auditoria, the S. Mark Taper Foundation Auditorium, a 2500-seat performance venue, as well as the Illsley Ball Nordstrom Recital Hall, which seats 536. Opened in September 1998 at a cost of $120 million, Benaroya quickly became noted for its technology-infused acoustics, touches of luxury and prominent location in a complex thoroughly integrated into the downtown area. Benaroya occupies an entire city block in the center of the city and has helped double the Seattle Symphony's budget and number of performances. The lobby of the hall features a large contribution of glass art, such as one given the title Crystal Cascade, by world-renowned artist Dale Chihuly.Arrange your visit to Benaroya Hall and discover more family-friendly attractions in Seattle using our Seattle trip planner.
Benaroya Hall is named for noted philanthropist Jack Benaroya, whose $15.8 million donation was the first and largest of many for construction of the facility.
The hall was designed by LMN Architects of Seattle, and was awarded the National Honor Award from the American Institute of Architects in 2001. The structural engineer on the project was Magnusson Klemencic Associates.
The building sits directly above the Great Northern Tunnel, which carries the primary rail corridor through the city, and adjacent to the Downtown Seattle Transit Tunnel, which has a station directly integrated into the building. The performance hall is insulated from the rumbles of the traffic in these tunnels and the streets outside the hall by floating on rubber pads which insulate it from the outer shell of the building. These same noise-insulation features would also serve to dampen the destructive effects of any prospective earthquakes.

We spend a few months each year, living in Seattle, and Benaroya Hall is one of our favorite places to go. Home to the Seattle Symphony, this Downtown building also hosts other groups in both its... more »

Seriously not a single bad seat in the entire place. My seats for Brandi Carlile with the symphony were up on the 3rd floor near the very back and the sound and views were still great up there. I... more »

This concert hall is just beautiful with excellent acoustics. For this visit we were there to hear Brandi Carlile with the Seattle Symphony. The sound is so alive here that Brandi and the twins did... more »

Heard Bach's B minor mass here last night--it was a beautifully powerful experience! Sitting in the second row didn't give us the best aural experience as the sound from the whole orchestra and choir didn't have room to mix, but it was still fantastic. Benaroya Hall is a great venue with amazing sound.

This is a modern looking concert hall. In my opinion, it lacks the grandeur of some older venues but I like the acoustics. I have only experienced concerts in the orchestra section and it was a nice experience. The seats are comfortable. As an out-of-towner it is great that there are quite a few hotels close by.

Absolutely amazing performances! The hall itself is very beautiful as well. We saw a performance with Joshua Bell and it was fantastic, really great solo. Plus it's nice to dress casually and get to have such an experience!

We saw Nat Geo Live here. Great facility for this, and many other things. Sound is wonderful, of course. Bathrooms are roomy and ladies, the doors open outward from the bathroom stalls so no shimmying around the toilet and door in your skirt to get in and out of the stall. Finally a bathroom designed by a woman.

Went to see a Symphony here and actually enjoyed it quite a bit. Their website tells you how visible or obstructed your view might be depending upon what seat you might pick. I especially liked that they organized the seats via price range but treated you with the highest respect regardless of the position you are in.
