  • This hike was recommended to me by one of my close friends. I was skeptical at first because I was unaware of this particular hike and I wasn't able to clearly see the path and the direction it went. ...  more »
  • Be prepared for a very challenging trail. If your not physically fit and have plenty of water, snacks and food for this one. It is very rugged, beautiful views, but very steep and a challenge for all....  more »
  • Please listen. Not a hike for the beginner. Very hard a lot of elevation changes. Were we started at the McDowell Mountain park it is a 5-6 hour hike one way. If you are hardcore try it. If not don't ...  more »

  • LOVE the winding road out here. Love the ascending challenge the first mile up. Then the course changes and becomes a hikers paradise. So many options to take on several different trails long and short distances. Trails are sandy and a few boulders to get over before getting to the Thumb. Love the views from Tom's Thumb such as Needlepoint, 4 Pikes, Weaver and McDowell. The Skyline of distance mountains is breathtaking.
  • Beautiful Hike! Took 1 hour to reach the top going at a leisurely pace, and according to my GPS was 2.23 miles to the top, 4.5 miles round trip. The trail is well maintained and there is little if any boulder hopping. However, the trail does have a lot of loose gravel that can cause you to slip on many of the steep inclines. The gain in elevation of about 1200 ft in 2.23 miles and therefore can be an strenuous workout. View at the top and the scenery throughout the hike was breathtaking. Enjoy!
  • I took about a five mile round trip hike on Tom's Thumb Trail directly to Tom's Thumb, a landmark feature of the mountain range. The trail is probably one of the best graded pathways I've followed anywhere for such a steep ascent. Where it did get rocky, I saw construction material nearby, so there must be a plan to grade the whole route. The scenery along the way is filled with massive granite rock surfaces shaped into fanciful forms and faces.
  • I'm not sure why I'm rating a trail head tho it is a rather nice trail head. get there early on the weekend as the parking lot will fill up. the trail is good. between 4 and 5 miles. the first mile is all switch backs but then it levels off. it's another half file to the butte then there are some other trails you can take if you like. great views. good workout.
  • This is my top-pick #1 so far in Scottsdale-Phoenix area. Beautiful drive to get there and there is plenty of parking. Perfect level of obstacles just be careful with the loose gravel sometimes you'll slip. There is bathroom for both men&women at the gate and it said no water, but when you are hiking you should responsible for your own water. Magnificent views along the way and there is not much traffic on the trail, it's just perfect the way I like it!
