Staunton River State Park, Scottsburg

#65 of 101 in Nature in Virginia
Must see · State Park · Nature / Park
Staunton River is one of our 37 Virginia State Parks. Please visit our official page at

The park was recognized in 2007 as a National Historic Landmark and a Virginia Historic Landmark. Many structures in the park, including the cabins, pool-house and picnic shelters, are little changed from when they were built by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the early 1930s. Tucked away in south central Virginia, the park lies between the Dan and Staunton Rivers at the threshold of Buggs Island Lake (also known as Kerr Reservoir). The largest lake in Virginia is only one of the park’s many attractions, which include an Olympic size pool with a 70-foot waterslide, a smaller log slide and the Pollywog Pond, which is a water playground for children (there is a size limit on this pool). The shaded campgrounds, rustic cabins, picturesque picnic shelters, well-maintained nature trails, and plenty of exciting outdoor opportunities for the whole family make Staunton River State Park the perfect place for your vacation.

  • The staff is incredible. They were so kind and went out of their way to be helpful. They were the best of any park I’ve been to. BE WARE OF CHIGGERS AND TICKS. The mosquitoes were horrible too. You....  more »
  • We visited Staunton River SP through Veterans’ day weekend and stayed in cabin # 4. The cabin was built in 1936 by the CCC. It’s a rustic cabin with all the modern comforts. 2 bedrooms, a small...  more »
  • We are traveling through all of the Virginia State Parks and so far this was our least favorite. The day we were there the bathrooms were out of toilet paper, the host camp site was messy. We walked.....  more »
  • Beautiful small park with wonderful camp sites and even better people. I love the concept of a "camp host" who is right there in the campground with you. Kudos to Rose Marie and Thomas (as well as their adorable dog, Hazel.) Great place for star gazing and family time.
  • Another gem in Virginia State Park system. Beautiful park with plenty a picnicking and playground areas. We were there for just the day. The day was sunny and warm but just breezy enough were it would have made swimming was just a little too cool for our liking, so we didn't use the pool. It looked really nice though. Actually, pretty much all we did was picnic and watch the little one play. Very relaxing. They have a nice visitors center with a great gift shop that has lots of nice things to purchase. One of the best gift shops we've encountered at the 20 or so parks we've visited so far.
  • Love this State Park, it is nicely layed out and the pool is excellent. Nice changing facilities with showers and changing cubicles. There is a concession serving food and drink. The pool was fabulous and there were a nice amount of loungers and chairs. There is not much shade here so be aware of that. Other than that the whole park is extremely clean and lovely. Fully recommend it.
  • This place holds a special place in my heart. My mom and I take yearly trips to various parks in Virginia. So far Staunton is our favorite! Cabins are a very good size we prefer the studio size. The trails are good, only of done a couple. It is just a beautiful spot, whether you are in a cabin or a tent.
  • Staunton park is a beautiful large state park located very close to South Boston. Have been to this park multiple times. Star gazing is the only activity that i missed. The park participates as part of the Dark Sky Project. Before pool close day, the pool was opened to Dogs and our Dog had a blast. Totally recommend the part for all activities.
