Shawnee State Park, Schellsburg
(4.6/5 based on 30 reviews on the web)
Shawnee State Park is a 3983acre Pennsylvania state park in Juniata and Napier Townships, Bedford County, Pennsylvania in the United States. Shawnee Lake, a 451acre warm water reservoir, is at the center of the park as its main attraction. The park's main entrance is just east of Schellsburg, along U.S. Route 30 and about west of the county seat of Bedford. The park is also easily accessed via State Route 31, by State Route 96 (Shawnee Road).HistoryShawnee State Park is named for Shawnee Creek, a stream which flowed through the area and was dammed to create the recreational lake at the park. The creek was named for the Shawnee, a Native American tribe that once lived in many parts of Pennsylvania, Ohio, and Kentucky. They were forced from their lands in Ohio and Kentucky by invading Iroquois, the powerful five-nation confederacy based in western New York. Later the Shawnee were forced west out of Ohio by encroachment by settlers of the Thirteen Colonies. The area surrounding the park was used as a trade route and military road during the French and Indian War (also known as the Seven Years' War). General John Forbes built the Forbes Road (which the modern-day U.S. Highway 30 parallels) to send supplies from the ports in Philadelphia and Baltimore to a force of British soldiers under his command as he tried to capture Fort Duquesne from the French in 1758.

  • They have a trail that goes around the lake. We usually ride our bicycles. Pretty scenery. Fishing. Swimming in the summer months. Campground too. Not too crowded.
  • We went there during the fall, swimming was closed, but you could still go to the beach. Very pretty to just grab a cup of coffee and hang out.
  • After our visit to the Flight 93 Memorial Park we stopped for lunch at Shawnee Park. I would recommend this park because it has a good walking trail. There are picnic tables near the water which is a ...  more »

  • Great State Park, large lake with swimming beachs, good boating a fishing. We are campers so that was our main focus, the camp ground is very nice. Clean restrooms with showers, play grounds and plenty of trails. Most main roads are paved, all RV sites are gravel, most are pretty level, tent sites are mostly grass. There are several areas with power, no water or sewer hookups yet, nice dump site. Most powered RV sites will fit big rigs, most are 30amp, some 50amp, Verizon signal and data are good, over air TV is almost zero, dish works in some areas. They are building a new area with 16 sites, FHU pull through 50amp, they are scheduled to be ready late 2017, very long sites but fairly close. We camp here at least once a year to meet up with friends. We are full timers and have a 42' fifth wheel, no problems getting in most sites. Enjoy your stay, Flight 93 memorial is not far, be sure to visit.
  • I've been going to this park my entire life. Well kept with lots of activity options. Some of the staff is wonderful, some are rude and won't return your call, like everywhere.
  • Love this place ! Beautiful, quiet, and so many things to do. not far from Bedford which is great place to visit
  • One of the best place to visit during the PA road trip. You could spend atleast a day to enjoy this place to the fullest.
  • A beautifully kept state park treasure in south central PA. Lots of picnic pavilions, tables, trails, & camp sites. The beach area is well maintained and accessible. There is a see through fence along the sandy beach to deter geese. Bathroom facilities are modern & clean. A lovely trail circles the lake for a 4-5 mile nature hike. Come for some great memories!
