Colonial Park Cemetery, Savannah

(4.6/5 based on 1,300+ reviews on the web)
Savannah's main cemetery for over century, Colonial Park Cemetery has over 9,000 graves. New interments stopped in 1853, but the cemetery remained open for the public. The grounds are landscaped with local species, including trees draped with Spanish moss that give the city its mysterious vibe. The cemetery is a peaceful place for a walk; stop to read the tombstones of those that helped build Savannah. • Definitely worth stopping here if you're wandering around town. Signage tells you some of the history. Tombstones were interesting to read.  more »
  • We only managed to find 1 gravestone in there with a changed date, but that was cool. According to our tour guide the night before there are more, so maybe we should have kept looking, but many of the...  more »
  • It is definitely worth a wander around to look at some of the memorials for Savannah's past. You learn about the yellow fever plague etc. You also get some great photo opportunities of the cathedral.  more »

  • 100 year old gravestones amazing how the maintain the lands they defiantly care great historical land mark.
  • This cemetery was so cool, as was all of Savannah. The gravestones with the graffiti from the Soldiers that camped there was very neat.
  • If you love history. This has been a park since the 1800's. They stopped burying people here then.
  • Eerie and beautiful at the same time. This cemetery was the first official one in town, but the bodies of Savannah's dead are still interred even beneath the sidewalks outside its gates. Check out some of the history and the old tombstones.
  • 200+ year old gravestones. Many important and long forgotten people from American history buried here. Some so old all the writing is worn away.
