Nathan Benderson Park, Sarasota

#10 of 13 in Parks in Sarasota
Nathan Benderson Park is located in Sarasota, Florida. It is North America’s premier 2,000-meter sprint course and regatta center. Over $40 million is committed to the facility’s future development, including a multi-function boathouse and athlete training center, starting huts and finish towers, grand stands and a state of the art boat maintenance and testing facility. Most of these facilities will be constructed on a first of its kind “regatta island” – an Olympic Village type setting which will provide competitors the support and focus which rowing demands, and spectators a viewing and entertainment platform unparalleled at sprint courses elsewhere in the world.

The Park will also be home to numerous other paddle sport competitions, from dragon boats to canoe and kayak races, as well as triathlon and cross country events. And to top it all off, the Park is located immediately adjacent to University Town Center – Southwest Florida’s premier shopping, dining and entertainment destination opening in October 2014!

Park History

Nathan Benderson Park is a unique 600-acre park which provides the public access to a 400-acre lake. The county purchased the site in the early 1990’s. Before that, the property had been an active shell excavation pit for road construction fill. Cooper Creek enters the east side of the large lake and exits at the northwest corner.

Nathan Benderson park is situated west of Interstate 75 and east of The Meadows residential community. The newly constructed Cattlemen Road extension provides access to the park from Fruitville and University Parkway. One of a handful of sites in North America identified as having all of the natural attributes that make up a premiere rowing facility, Nathan Benderson Park began hosting organized regatta competitions in 2009.

  • Very beautiful rowing venue. Unfortunately for us it was extremely windy the day we were there but as far as venues for rowing, it was fantastic. Only suggestion I would have is that they need to get with a bicycle store and offer bikes for rent during events. The sides of the course have pavement the length of the coarse. I would have rented a bike in a heartbeat to get to follow my daughters boat. Maybe someday.
  • Home of the World Championships of Rowing! Great bird watching and one lap around the paved park sidewalk is a 5k. Love coming here to run. Be warned, there's no shade so bring a hat if you're planning on being here for a while.
  • The best rowing venues I've been on. Gorgeous race course, very easy to navigate (except for a tight starting area, but it's bearable) leads to an overall pleasant experience. It does get very hot and can get muddy so just keep in mind that you need to pack for the weather.
  • Looking like a great venue for the world rowing championships. The area has a great jogging/walking trail along the waterway. There is also a small park for the kids to enjoy. I myself plan to tackle the great trail in the near future.
  • Beautiful lake for taxes, and great facilities, including a shiny new tower, but the fields used for event parking are basically mud pits- not fun to slog through! Relatively few mosquitos, though, and fireworks were great. Parking is cheap, but it took 45 minutes to get out after event.
