Nathan Benderson Park, Sarasota

#11 of 22 in Parks in Sarasota
Nathan Benderson Park is located in Sarasota, Florida. It is North America’s premier 2,000-meter sprint course and regatta center. Over $40 million is committed to the facility’s future development, including a multi-function boathouse and athlete training center, starting huts and finish towers, grand stands and a state of the art boat maintenance and testing facility. Most of these facilities will be constructed on a first of its kind “regatta island” – an Olympic Village type setting which will provide competitors the support and focus which rowing demands, and spectators a viewing and entertainment platform unparalleled at sprint courses elsewhere in the world.

The Park will also be home to numerous other paddle sport competitions, from dragon boats to canoe and kayak races, as well as triathlon and cross country events. And to top it all off, the Park is located immediately adjacent to University Town Center – Southwest Florida’s premier shopping, dining and entertainment destination opening in October 2014!

Park History

Nathan Benderson Park is a unique 600-acre park which provides the public access to a 400-acre lake. The county purchased the site in the early 1990’s. Before that, the property had been an active shell excavation pit for road construction fill. Cooper Creek enters the east side of the large lake and exits at the northwest corner.

Nathan Benderson park is situated west of Interstate 75 and east of The Meadows residential community. The newly constructed Cattlemen Road extension provides access to the park from Fruitville and University Parkway. One of a handful of sites in North America identified as having all of the natural attributes that make up a premiere rowing facility, Nathan Benderson Park began hosting organized regatta competitions in 2009.

  • I like the park, even better since the remodel was finally finished. It's very pretty and the lights in the trees are beautiful at night, but I really really hate that there in zero shade in the playground. Those solar power cells are pretty great, except that they get super super hot at peak time in the summer. If ever was a remodel I would think about putting some shade in, preferably near the power cells. That would be splendid!
  • Is my best place amazing Park for distress, do exercise and enjoy walking. Only need music but is beautiful. I love much and enjoy. I invite any one to come
  • We walked around at night, nice and quiet. Its pretty dark, but there are a few lit paths to walk. Very pretty, will be back during the day to get the full experience !
  • Reviewing specifically the kids playground: this place is awesome for the very young set. If you’ve got toddlers that are just walking, this is the place for you. Lots of little things for them to do, rubber flooring, one gate that locks. Older kids will enjoy it, too, but it’s especially great for littles. Only drawback: no shade. Like, none, unless you’re there very early or very late. Benderson can surely afford some shade sails to make this park more useable in the summer and in the heat of the day.
  • Just under 3.5 miles around the lake and you can bike, walk, in-line skate, jog and so much more. Children's play ground is a nice size. Crewing practice or fishing happen in this fantastic location.
