Ca' d'Zan, Sarasota

4.7
#3 of 17 in Historic Sites in Southwest Gulf Coast
In 1924, the circus king John Ringling set out to build Ca' d'Zan as a palace fit for a man of his status. Completed in 1926 and situated at the Sarasota waterfront, the mansion stands as the symbol of the Roaring Twenties, and John Ringling’s rise from a humble background to the very top of the social ladder. The design is inspired by Doge’s Palace in Venice, and captures John’s and his wife Mable’s love for the city. The couple spared no expenses to fit their house with fine furniture and artwork, as well as materials such as mahogany, rosewood, and kingwood. Handpicked American and European artists created murals, plaster and marble decorations. After decades of neglect, in 2002 the mansion was restored back to its full splendor. An admission to the Ringling Museum of Art also includes a quick tour of the mansion’s first floor, while additional fee is required for a detailed tour of the house. • Between $20 and $40 apply again, if that CA should be visited D'zan Mansion from the inside. The impressive building is located in the Ringling Park on the water and is also very worthwhile from the outside. In the afternoon, the Sun is cheap for the Venetian-style terrace.

  • Our book club read The Ringmaster's Wife and followed it up with a road trip to see the mansion described in the book. Gaudy by today's standards, but vibrant and well-crafted. We were awe-struck. The...  more »

  • This place is really cool!! It's a bit pricy but the grounds and museums are really well done. This is a great activity for out of town guests and if you're from the area and haven't been to Ca' d'Zan.....GO!
  • Very beautiful place. It was great fun for the kids. The circus museum is a must see. Spectacular!
  • We did both tours of the home and enjoyed it immensely. The hidden places tours takes you to very interesting parts of the house and to be honest the roof top views alone are worth it. Definitely recommend taking both tours!
  • I wouldn't recommend to visit Ca d'Zan. Staff there is haughty and disrespectful. One haughty staff told me not to carry my purse, she said my purse is about to touch the furniture. Then she said the first thing I am going to tell you are the rules, to which I responded that I knew the rules and had not violated them.
  • Very interesting place. Would love to go back to see what we didn't get to see in the day we spent there!
