Recognized as a basilica by Pope Benedict XVI in 2005, The Cathedral Basilica of St. Francis of Assisi was founded as a parish the same year as the city was founded, in 1610. The current building featuring Romanesque revival architecture was dedicated in 1887. Note the round arches and Corinthian columns. The rose windows in the front of the church depict the twelve apostles. The best view of the windows is from the chapel where services take place. In the exterior porticos, several statues commemorate saints. The statue of Kateri Tekakwitha pays homage to the first Native American to be beatified. Notice the bronze doors leading back inside the church. The panels on the outside tell the story of the church in Santa Fe history. • The two churches dedicated to St Francis are wonderful. Frescoes, architecture, and the general tranquil feeling are relaxing and awe inspiring. Attended a Sunday morning Mass, also. Wonderful music.....  more

  • So sad to need to mark this a one-star but kind of find it necessary as my wife and I are devout Catholics and yeah we are from Arizona and I know that New Mexico has quite a fear have what's being portrayed as something very deadly out there. But this Cathedral is way way way overboard with the mask situation. Even having Usher's walking up and down the aisle to make sure the nose is covered. Losing all reverence and meaning of the actual Mass. And then they were having a concert afterwards and announce that you had to be vaccinated with the vaccine card to attend. Oh my goodness getting scary these days. The fear that is placed on people especially in a state like this. It's really unfortunate and sad I know I pray that it gets better soon. Especially since the irony is how masks don't really even work. It's just an image that the government wanting to place and it's invading the church space very very very unfortunate.
  • It looks so sad without the big tree on the south side of the entrance! PS. I still don't like the gift shop right as you enter the church! Too much of a marketplace!! The entry should be a place of preparation to enter holy ground, a sacred place of prayer! Put the gift shop in one of the buildings to the back!!!
  • Not quite sure how to review a church. I walked in late for mass because there were so many versions of the times online. I should have checked the sign out front the day before. The musicians seemed to be doing double duty from the Santa Fe Opera. They were so welcoming, as was everyone inside after mass. I really got there late. People wandering the beautiful gardens were also friendly and happy to help you not just take selfies. Truly beautiful, warm, peaceful. Be sure to check out the old wing/chapel at the left. So much history.
  • Very beautiful and interesting (not being Catholic). A volunteer guide that was there to field questions... Was very informative as to describing what we were enjoying in our view.
  • Amazing Christmas Day service! The choir was amazing, and it was amazing to have the service done by the Archbishop! Very nice church. I know now why my in laws are the parishioners of the Cathedral.
