The University of California, Santa Cruz, is a public research university and one of 10 campuses in the University of California system. Located 75 miles south of San Francisco at the edge of the coastal community of Santa Cruz, the campus lies on 2001acres of rolling, forested hills overlooking the Pacific Ocean and Monterey Bay.Founded in 1965, UC Santa Cruz began as a showcase for progressive, cross-disciplinary undergraduate education, innovative teaching methods and contemporary architecture. Since then, it has evolved into a modern research university with a wide variety of both undergraduate and graduate programs, while retaining its reputation for strong undergraduate support and student political activism. The residential college system, which consists of ten small colleges, is intended to combine the student support of a small college with the resources of a major university.

  • I'm always amazed that UCSC does not make the top 10 lists for most beautiful college campuses consistently. The view from the campus alone is worth being on the list but that isn't all this place has...  more »

  • I attend UCSC and the campus is beautiful. It's like we are in a forest and there are deer, turkey, and redwoods as high as you can imagine.  more »

  • Beautiful gardens at the base of Univ. of California Santa Cruz. Well worth a stop. Various gardens from different continents. Sculpture art amongst the plants. Great gift shop with high quality gifts and garden supples.
  • Nice to see different types of plants and trees. Also the art sculptures were beautiful to see.
  • We had a great time walking through this area. Very interesting.
  • Beautiful plants, feels much larger than it is due to cleverly arranged paths. Good place to bring a young child who is interested in nature.
  • I'm on a tour of California's gardens and this one was lovely and very worth the drive down to Santa Cruz. The Santa Cruz gardens were not as rustic as UC Berkeley but also not as manicured as San Francisco. There was plenty of interesting garden art scattered throughout the property, which is always a bonus in my book. You can walk this one in regular sneakers without any problem and there were not many stairs to navigate.
