Mystery Spot, Santa Cruz

3.9
Enjoy an afternoon of illusions at Mystery Spot, where it appears the laws of gravity and physics do not apply. Watch water flow backward and people stand sideways. Surveyors discovered the spot in 1939, and visitors were first invited to experience the wonder in 1940. After your topsy-turvy experience inside the house, get your footing on the hiking trail and admire the redwoods. It's wise to book tickets far in advance online or by phone. Parking is available for an additional fee. Using our world travel planner, Santa Cruz attractions like Mystery Spot can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • This was made in 1939, it’s a visual illusion based attraction. Visitors are generally grouped in a cluster of 15 – 20 members and for every cluster a guide is given by default. This spot is on a hill...  more »
  • Definitely worth a go, if you are halfway between the and San Francisco or Santa Cruz, is a recommendable walk. Very funny as all perceptions change as soon as you enter the cabin! Tide a little but it's worth, photos that you take are not to be missed! Very good guide that we had, makes you to participate and is very funny. $8 entry and 5 parking. Open every day.

  • I visited this place price now and I feel that this is one of the places that I always take my friends when they come from other states in the US. All the friends home I took your really enjoyed the tour here. I would recommend to visit during the daytime as the door guys are really active during the daytime and you get a beautiful view of the trees out there and you also get to see the Mystery Spot in a better way. The tickets is just priced at $8 and you can either book it online or you can also go and take it there but usually during the weekends the tickets are full so it's better to book online. If you book tickets online then you have to reach 30 minutes before your show time and they wouldn't allow you inside if you are not before 30 minutes so take a note of that definitely this place it's all must visit if you live in the Bay Area.
  • I happened to visit near closing time on a super busy day, some of the staff seemed a little on edge. Once the tour got started, though, the guide was very perky and friendly. From what I over heard with the other tour groups, the guides use many of the same jokes and generally have the same script to follow, which is to be expected. The tours are interactive with several little activities that require volunteers to demonstrate the unusual tilt of the area. Make sure to take advantage of your time in the cabin to take some wacky, gravity defying pictures. The tour was short and sweet, and you get a free bumper sticker. Not bad for eight dollar admission and a five dollar parking fee per car. The only real downside is that the food wasn't great and was a bit on the expensive side. I got some chili over rice for $3.50, it tasted lackluster and was a small portion. Make sure to get something with nacho cheese on it to enhance the flavor. To be fair, it does seem like they have plenty of other ,more pricey and tasty options on the menu but I wasn't willing to swing it. About half thier menu is vegetarian friendly, gotta love it. The gift shop is well stocked and reasonably priced, spent a good twenty minutes just choosing a souvenir. Overall, a fun little trip , I'm glad I went. If you have kids, it'll make for an excellent field trip and might get them thinking on the wonders of science and the natural world. That's all I'll say, don't want to spoil the Mystery of the Spot ;).
  • Our tour guide was awesome and super punny... I'm a sucker for corny jokes. From the time I finished the tour and walked to the car I forgot his name (it was not an ordinary name), but I do remember he said to call him Matthew if we had any complaints. No complaints but want to share it was an entertaining little stop during our road trip down the coast. The history and mystery of the place was interesting and definitely worth my $8.
  • Great fun and inexpensive tour. Worth the stop. Makes for great pictures. Be careful as you drive up as the road is narrow. Twice truck and fire engine pulled to side to let us through. Also, because of the nature of the attraction it is not wheelchair accessible in my opinion since you have to hike up a short, steep incline. One of the people's on our tour was unable to enter due to mobility issues so I would recommend to ask before you purchase tickets.
  • So much fun! Took their evening Christmas special tour and it was magical from start to finish. From the Santa greeting us at the entrance covered in fairy lights to the Mystery Spot itself it was a fantastic evening. Being in the Mystery Spot itself is a bit like being drunk and my poor brain struggled with it! Definitely recommend pre-booking online to ensure you get in as the place can get super busy. Great value ($8) for a California classic!
