Winery / Vineyard Food & Drink
In 1962, Pierre Lafond reestablished Santa Barbara County's winemaking tradition by founding Santa Barbara Winery. The winery was the first since prohibition and has played a pioneering role in the subsequent development of the Santa Ynez Valley as a world-class wine growing region. Pierre purchased land in 1971 on the western end of the valley and began planting what is now a 97.5 acre vineyard.

Winemaker Bruce McGuire was brought on board in 1981 and encouraged plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah, noting that the soil and microclimate of Lafond Vineyar, classified as cool Region 1, were ideal for these varietals.

In 1996, Santa Barbara Winery expanded to include a new line of premium wines dedicated to producing exclusively vineyard and appellation designated Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Lafond Winery's new facilitiy was opened to visitors in 2001.

  • That is of course, unless the wine is from the Santa Barbara winery. I haven't been disappointed yet. This place has a great wine tasting flight with 3 different options, all whites, all reds, or a mi...  more »
  • I'm a Chardonnay pig. And I also enjoy soft, mellow reds that don't bite back. What I don't like are Riesilings and Viogniers. Both are usually way to sweet or funky. But the server at our tasting, wh...  more »
  • We each had the mixed flight, with two whites and three reds-$12 each on Sunday. Not large amounts but knowledge servers and when I saw they had a Grenache she added that. All good wines. Cute shop wi...  more »

  • Excellent wine. Was very pleased with the red flight. Cool indoor space with all the barrels. Very friendly staff. Nice outdoor patio space.
  • I'm a tiny bit biased to Santa Barbara being a UCSB grad. Nearly 20 years after graduating, and now living in Boston, being able to get SB wines locally here is heaven sent. Chardonnay is still awesome. Pinot wow! I miss being able to visit the brewery but every bottle I cherish. Thank you.
  • Good wine-cyte gift shop, nice patio outside to sip on your wine. #Bonnie&Clide
  • Love their little patio area. I'm mostly into sweet wine and they always have something I like. We like to get a glass and sit on the patio and people watch. Great way to spend an afternoon.
  • Good wines for the price. Enjoyed the cab the most.

Where to stay in Santa Barbara

Blessed with a mild climate and lush location, Santa Barbara remains a playground for the rich and famous, so it's no surprise that accommodations can be extremely expensive here. The priciest hotels are near the water, so before you make your reservations, decide if staying beachside fits into your budget. You can find more affordable rooms at any one of the area's small motels, located just blocks from the beaches. These offer secure parking, cable TV, and free Wi-Fi.
