In 1962, Pierre Lafond reestablished Santa Barbara County's winemaking tradition by founding Santa Barbara Winery. The winery was the first since prohibition and has played a pioneering role in the subsequent development of the Santa Ynez Valley as a world-class wine growing region. Pierre purchased land in 1971 on the western end of the valley and began planting what is now a 97.5 acre vineyard.

Winemaker Bruce McGuire was brought on board in 1981 and encouraged plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah, noting that the soil and microclimate of Lafond Vineyar, classified as cool Region 1, were ideal for these varietals.

In 1996, Santa Barbara Winery expanded to include a new line of premium wines dedicated to producing exclusively vineyard and appellation designated Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Lafond Winery's new facilitiy was opened to visitors in 2001.

  • The staff here were very warm and welcoming. Their tasting room is very modern, with numerous culinary items for sale. Our server was very accommodating, allowing us to modify their tasting flight to ...  read more »
  • This was a nice tasting. We weren't floored by the wines. Option to sit outside, although we hid in the back with our kids.
  • Excellent wine with reasonable prices. Reserve Chardonnay and Syrah are excellent. Joined the club. Will be back. Liked all the Reds and only tasted a few whites. Ships to where you want.
  • Love their little patio area. I'm mostly into sweet wine and they always have something I like. We like to get a glass and sit on the patio and people watch. Great way to spend an afternoon.
  • Great samples . Loved Primitivo. Attractive decor 😮
  • Nicely decorated and a great wine selection. However a bit pricey an a bit of an arrogant and distant attitude towards customers. Unlike other European winery's.
  • Wines seem priced very well and of decent quality. I agree with the other reviewers as the vibe I was getting from the older woman helping us was somewhat arrogant.
  • My wife and I were exploring Santa Barbara tasting rooms and the Santa Barbara Winery was recommended to us. We had a great experience meeting Richie and Carlos. Richie gave us some great insight into the wines we were tasting and Carlos took us into the production facility to explain how it is all done. Carlos is actually a certified sommelier, with an obvious passion for wine and wine making. Just awesome. We would recommend this winery in particular since it is one of the few that has their production facility right behind the tasting room. Most are just storefronts. Wine was great.
