#4 of 15 in Wineries in Santa Barbara
In 1962, Pierre Lafond reestablished Santa Barbara County's winemaking tradition by founding Santa Barbara Winery. The winery was the first since prohibition and has played a pioneering role in the subsequent development of the Santa Ynez Valley as a world-class wine growing region. Pierre purchased land in 1971 on the western end of the valley and began planting what is now a 97.5 acre vineyard.

Winemaker Bruce McGuire was brought on board in 1981 and encouraged plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah, noting that the soil and microclimate of Lafond Vineyar, classified as cool Region 1, were ideal for these varietals.

In 1996, Santa Barbara Winery expanded to include a new line of premium wines dedicated to producing exclusively vineyard and appellation designated Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Lafond Winery's new facilitiy was opened to visitors in 2001.

  • We had a great experience. Love the different flights of wine. Recommend sitting at the bar to hear explanations of all the wines, and getting to switch some out.  more »
  • 19 minutes ago Not the best experience. Owned by Lafond, which is down the street and a much better experience. Server got very defensive when I asked her if tastings were credited towards bottle purc...  more »
  • We can't wait for the education of Italians in the Valpolicella valley, let alone the refinement and sophistication of the French in the champagne region, but well that Californians could try a little harder. The tasting is done without accompaniment and explanation, you choose the amount of wine you want to taste, receive a glass bottom, nor does it look like tasting and a little coffee of biscui, to clean the papillae, all very fast, almost a fast wine, gringo stuff. The place seemed attractive by the photos, but personally it's weird and a little forced, lacked a follow-up, say a short tour. On the front there is a small market selling interesting things linked to wine, but with prohibitive prices. I wouldn't waste my time putting on my travel schedule.

  • No complaints, but nothing too special either. Reasonable wine tasting prices. The staff was pleasant, the wine was just okay. Surprised on how busy it got for a weekday afternoon. Enjoyed it, just wasn’t overwhelming.
  • Nice tasting Some tid bits available for purchase I was more interested in the wine - was on a walking wine tour with a complimentary glass of sauv blanc! Very nice very mild - perfect for an afternoon drink and experience. I will return! The nice thing about all these tasting rooms is that they are on the one street close, open and inviting!
  • Out of the wine tasting we did in the Funk Zone, this was one of the best! The wines were...impeccable! I did the white tasting, which was perfect for a hot afternoon. All of them were crisp and refreshing. They provide free breadsticks and let you keep the wine glass! Highly recommend this for the cute terrace outside. Dogs allowed on terrace.
  • Went wine tasting and tried the mixed flight of reds and whites. Loved the vibe and the experience. Great location in the heart of Santa Barbara's Funk Zone. Great wine.
  • Fun tasting room with indoor and outdoor seating. The wines were good and the servers told us about the tasting notes, which I always appreciate
