Santa Barbara Winery, Santa Barbara

#5 of 16 in Wineries in Santa Barbara
In 1962, Pierre Lafond reestablished Santa Barbara County's winemaking tradition by founding Santa Barbara Winery. The winery was the first since prohibition and has played a pioneering role in the subsequent development of the Santa Ynez Valley as a world-class wine growing region. Pierre purchased land in 1971 on the western end of the valley and began planting what is now a 97.5 acre vineyard.

Winemaker Bruce McGuire was brought on board in 1981 and encouraged plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah, noting that the soil and microclimate of Lafond Vineyar, classified as cool Region 1, were ideal for these varietals.

In 1996, Santa Barbara Winery expanded to include a new line of premium wines dedicated to producing exclusively vineyard and appellation designated Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Lafond Winery's new facilitiy was opened to visitors in 2001.

  • A local friend is a member so we were able to get free tastings. They do not have a vineyard so this seems like one of the only ways to try their wines. It was busy and a bit noisy yet glad we popped ...  more »
  • First, the experience there would vastly improve if they had 2 or so staff, who stand lazily behind the bar and gab with one another, that would serve outside on the patio instead. But that is a pie-i...  more »
  • Our last stop for the day on our urban wine trail. Super cute, super nice people, excellent wines and a friendly winery cat! It’s Santa Barbara’s oldest winery as well, so definitely worth a stop.  more »

  • Service was good, good pricing for tasting. I would like to compliment the wine though I love a nice glass, the ten offered to sample were far below my expectations. I am not a sommelier, but I consider myself with novice experience and taste. They were not all a failure two flirted with my palate, the grenache and the Cab, so i took them home for later enjoyment. Maybe future harvests may yield better product.
  • My husband and I visited new year's eve morning and had a delightful experience. we both had the red flightans ordered the cheese plate to accompany our tasting. Recommend highly!
  • Totally Awesome...fun wonderful people that work there...I love it there. Try it for yourself you won't regret it!!
  • One of my favourite wine tasting establishments.
  • The staff here seems less friendly and helpful than a lot of the others.
