Santa Barbara Winery, Santa Barbara

(4/5 based on 85+ reviews on the web)
In 1962, Pierre Lafond reestablished Santa Barbara County's winemaking tradition by founding Santa Barbara Winery. The winery was the first since prohibition and has played a pioneering role in the subsequent development of the Santa Ynez Valley as a world-class wine growing region. Pierre purchased land in 1971 on the western end of the valley and began planting what is now a 97.5 acre vineyard.

Winemaker Bruce McGuire was brought on board in 1981 and encouraged plantings of Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah, noting that the soil and microclimate of Lafond Vineyar, classified as cool Region 1, were ideal for these varietals.

In 1996, Santa Barbara Winery expanded to include a new line of premium wines dedicated to producing exclusively vineyard and appellation designated Pinot Noir, Chardonnay and Syrah. Lafond Winery's new facilitiy was opened to visitors in 2001.

  • This was great find, wines are very reasonably priced. The decor in tasting room is nice, great selection of whites and reds..
  • I came here with 2 girlfriends. We dropped in, no appointment made. They offer 3 different "flights" which is a tasting of different wines they offer. We waited quit some time to be served while the b...  more »

  • I'm a tiny bit biased to Santa Barbara being a UCSB grad. Nearly 20 years after graduating, and now living in Boston, being able to get SB wines locally here is heaven sent. Chardonnay is still awesome. Pinot wow! I miss being able to visit the brewery but every bottle I cherish. Thank you.
  • Love their little patio area. I'm mostly into sweet wine and they always have something I like. We like to get a glass and sit on the patio and people watch. Great way to spend an afternoon.
  • Great samples . Loved Primitivo. Attractive decor 😮
  • Delicious wines. Always packed on Sunday
  • Nicely decorated and a great wine selection. However a bit pricey an a bit of an arrogant and distant attitude towards customers. Unlike other European winery's.
