Where to stay in Santa Barbara

Blessed with a mild climate and lush location, Santa Barbara remains a playground for the rich and famous, so it's no surprise that accommodations can be extremely expensive here. The priciest hotels are near the water, so before you make your reservations, decide if staying beachside fits into your budget. You can find more affordable rooms at any one of the area's small motels, located just blocks from the beaches. These offer secure parking, cable TV, and free Wi-Fi.

  • The Green Star Coffee two bags for $20, and the noodle bar are the only things that are truly affordable in the whole place, based on the socio-economic makeup of the neighborhood. Nice ambience, though, and The Garden bar replacing the useless little grocery shop I admit was a plus. But all the locals around here agree that the Vons that used to be in that spot was way more useful.
  • Some great options for eating and beers at the Garden. Garden is a fun place to watch sports, but can be crowded for big games. Prices are a little high.
  • Nice place with a good range of individual food and drinks stalls. I've only tried the coffee and ice cream places so far, but found the experience very enjoyable.
  • I regularly go during the week for lunch and a coffee. I recommend Flagstone Pantry and Greenstar Coffee. There are other good options too, like Empty Bowl Thai Food and Corazon Mexican restaurant. It is a little noisy because of the open ceiling and concrete floors. But there's a nice outdoor patio with limited seating.
  • It's nice to hang out. Things are a bit over priced but overall the service is good. It's a bit more lively now too that the market is gone and a beer hall is there.
