  • Part of the museum was closed for renovation. The installation pieces would have benefited from some handout on the artist's vision. The impressionist works were worthwhile  more »
  • Maybe it was the exhibit during the day we visited as it was not to our taste. We were disappointed as only one floor was open and the permanent collection was extremely small.  more »
  • The Museum is not very big, and the number of works less. And that's what's nice, the Museum has a special room where the teachers sit with the children, while parents attend the Museum.

  • If you've been to the Museum of Contemporary Art in Los Angeles on Grand Avenue, you have an idea of what to expect from the Santa Barbara Museum of Art. The experience is just smaller in scale. The Santa Barbara Museum of Art has some incredible displays and artists. The atmosphere is "other worldly", in that you realize you've left the world of stores, noise and cars and landed in an environment filled with inspiration and color. There's going to be some extensive remodeling in 2017 on the museum, but its worth a visit. There's a neat gift store and small, casual restaurant attached at street level. Plan on at least a half day, maybe even a full day. The collections are that extensive.
  • Got an intimate tour of the permanent collection. Don't know if that's normal. Very special experience with the amazingly human museum staff. Memorable experience!
  • They had a fabulous exhibition on....David Weisner! Superb. Regular featured art was also good. ...Degas...Monet. Lovely staff.
  • Very nice museum. Great to find a Torres Garcia on the permanent collection, beautiful artist from Uruguay.
  • There is a nice collection and good visiting exhibitions. The museum is under construction for expansion, so the exhibition space is limited now.

Where to stay in Santa Barbara

Blessed with a mild climate and lush location, Santa Barbara remains a playground for the rich and famous, so it's no surprise that accommodations can be extremely expensive here. The priciest hotels are near the water, so before you make your reservations, decide if staying beachside fits into your budget. You can find more affordable rooms at any one of the area's small motels, located just blocks from the beaches. These offer secure parking, cable TV, and free Wi-Fi.
