Established in 1926, Santa Barbara Botanic Garden displays California's rare and indigenous plants in their natural setting. Located on 32 hectares (78 acres), this is California's oldest botanic garden, dedicated to research, education, and conservation. You can discover over 1,000 different species by following the garden's network of scenic trails, which stretch for over 9 km (5 mi) and offer sweeping views of the Santa Ynez Mountains. Don’t miss one of the garden's signature features--an old rock dam--constructed in 1806 by Native Americans. Be sure to walk all the way to the garden's redwood grove, a cool resting place even on the hottest of summer days. • The garden is always changing and beautiful! The docents are always full of information on what is going on. New exhibits to see across the street.
  • The garden was perfect as it's filled with only CA native plants and the walkways are groomed. We met very friendly staff and ended the day across the street at the new island overlook part. Comfy cha...  read more »

  • A great place to enjoy nature away from the excitement of State Street. Very quiet and peaceful, a surprisingly long string of trails to hike along. I saw cholla cactus, redwood trees, and blue-belly lizards. Also, was lucky enough to meet several of the staff here; all of them were extremely pleasant, knowledgeable, and excellent conversationalists.
  • I take my walks on the beautiful trails in the gardens. I always learn something new about our native habitat. I especially love the redwood Grove. Of course, I always have to check out the gift shop and the nursery. I get full use out of my membership!
  • Great place to enjoy nature and learn at the same time. There is a great redwood forest area and plenty of little hiking areas. This is great place to stop and check out if you are into nature and never been before.
  • Great place to walk about. It is a bit steep in places. Make sure to visit during spring where there is running water and blooming flowers.
  • What a great place to spend half a day. Beautiful place to walk and nice photo ops too. They even have a store and a Coastal Redwood Tree Grove.
