Sanibel Island Lighthouse, Sanibel Island

Lighthouse
The historical Sanibel Island Lighthouse was finally erected in 1884 after several decades of pressure from locals. It marked the entrance to San Carlos Bay for ships visiting the once-busy port of Punta Rassa. Today, the lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and a popular end destination for beach strolls. Though you cannot enter inside the lighthouse or keeper's house, the grounds are a pleasant place to explore and take photos. Put Sanibel Island Lighthouse into our Sanibel Island trip generator and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • We biked to the Lighthouse from Old Middle Gulf Rd and it was a nice distance and better than driving there. Bathrooms are available and we were told shelling was good there, but we looked around and ...  more »
  • The lighthouse is a magical place. It is the tallest structure on Sanibel Island. (Maximum building height here is 3 stories.) The lighthouse is on the eastern tip of Sanibel, and is a landmark that c...  more »
  • Interesting lighthouse. Not the typical "living structure" one is often used to seeing. Beach area is rife with shells and good swimming and lots of people fishing off the shore and nearby pier.  more »

  • Beautiful place to visit. The beach is great and has its own feel to experience. Just have to be a little careful in the water, the undercurrent can be very strung since its where the intercoast and coastal waters meet
  • Lots of information about the lighthouse and the wildlife. There are lots of shells and things to see. Great place to bring kids and families.
  • Not much to see at the lighthouse. The buildings are all closed off, and you can just look at it. Worth stopping at if you come to the beach and want to walk around. There are bathrooms nearby.
  • Beautiful view, especially during sunrise and sunset. Ft. Myers Boat Tours go in close proximity to the lighthouse, and the beach is wonderful as well
  • Nice pier close by for fishing. There is a shaded picnic area near the lighthouse.
