Sanibel Island Lighthouse, Sanibel Island

(3.7/5 based on 1,800+ reviews on the web)
The historical Sanibel Island Lighthouse was finally erected in 1884 after several decades of pressure from locals. It marked the entrance to San Carlos Bay for ships visiting the once-busy port of Punta Rassa. Today, the lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and a popular end destination for beach strolls. Though you cannot enter inside the lighthouse or keeper's house, the grounds are a pleasant place to explore and take photos. Put Sanibel Island Lighthouse into our Sanibel Island trip generator and find out what's close by, where to stay, and where to head next.

  • The place was a “Must See” for this particular Lighthouse hunter, so we came here as part of a historical tour of Sanibel. It was certainly unlike any lighthouse we have ever seen before. The small an...  more »
  • You can't visit the island without going down to see the lighthouse. We visited during the day and then went back to see it in the dark.  more »
  • Peaceful area with lots of shells around low tide. The prevailing currents deposits fresh shells with each tide.  more »

  • Beautiful place to visit. The beach is great and has its own feel to experience. Just have to be a little careful in the water, the undercurrent can be very strung since its where the intercoast and coastal waters meet
  • Lots of information about the lighthouse and the wildlife. There are lots of shells and things to see. Great place to bring kids and families.
  • Not much to see at the lighthouse. The buildings are all closed off, and you can just look at it. Worth stopping at if you come to the beach and want to walk around. There are bathrooms nearby.
  • Beautiful view, especially during sunrise and sunset. Ft. Myers Boat Tours go in close proximity to the lighthouse, and the beach is wonderful as well
  • Nice pier close by for fishing. There is a shaded picnic area near the lighthouse.
