Sanibel Island Lighthouse, Sanibel Island

The historical Sanibel Island Lighthouse was finally erected in 1884 after several decades of pressure from locals. It marked the entrance to San Carlos Bay for ships visiting the once-busy port of Punta Rassa. Today, the lighthouse is on the National Register of Historic Places and a popular end destination for beach strolls. Though you cannot enter inside the lighthouse or keeper's house, the grounds are a pleasant place to explore and take photos. • While the Lighthouse itself isn't very large (More of a light pole), it is a nice area to explore. On southern end of Sanibel. Nice beach, with shells and birds. Good walking along shore a firm, packe...  more »

  • Someone mentioned that this lighthouse is not like the ones in New England. It is true. But I loved it anyway. The breeze at the beach is amazing. Shells are picked up quickly. We were sitting at the ...  more »

  • Wow Sanibel beach was really amazing. Definitely recommend this place to anyone who wants to take a vacation to Florida or to floridans who live here for a weekend getaway. Loved the beach. Nice waves and calm place to relax. Loved this beach for another reason that is it had lots and lots of shells. Superb it was. Collected some for myself. Parking is very limited and $4 per hour. You can see few people here not too crowded which is good. There are restrooms too.
  • I was not able to get there in time to learn the history of the lighthouse. I got there at 6:00 p.m. and they close at 4:00 p.m. I am planning on going back and see this lighthouse because I want to learn the history of this lighthouse. I was able to get cute picture of the lighthouse.
  • Ok for seashells. Lots of sea weed on the shore and washing up in the water. Parking limited... Over all worth going too
  • Definitely check it out if you're on Sanibel, but end of the day it's just an average lighthouse that you can't climb.
  • It’s a great place. Not all the shops and touristy. It’s relaxing
