Friends of Hearst Castle, San Simeon

It took William Randolph Hearst, the famed newspaper magnate, nearly three decades to complete Friends of Hearst Castle, one of the largest houses in the United States. Architect Julia Morgan envisioned the house with 56 bedrooms, 61 bathrooms, 19 sitting rooms, tennis courts, movie theaters, an airfield, and the world's largest private zoo. Part of a state park since 1958, the house Hearst called his "Enchanted Hill" now offers public tours, attracting visitors with its considerable collection of art and antiques. The estate's focal point is an outdoor swimming pool, rebuilt three times to suit its owner's tastes. The centerpiece of the pool, which offers expansive vistas of the mountains and the ocean, is the facade of an ancient Roman temple Hearst imported from Europe. • This was one of the best stops on our 9000 mi trip. I would highly recommend you take a full day and get there early. Take a camera because you can catch some nice pics
  • Paid 25 bucks each for the grand tour of 3 rooms..lasting 30 minutes. Don't go unless its a beautiful day or you may feel jipped!

Where to stay in San Simeon

Deciding where to stay in San Simeon doesn't require a great deal of consideration. All motels, hotels, inns, and lodges are located along Route 1 in the community south of the castle along the coast. If these are full, head just south of San Simeon State Park, where a larger selection of bed and breakfasts line the coast on the northern edge of the town of Cambria.
