Double Peak is located south of San Marcos, California. The elevation at the is summit is 1646ft, and approximately 1,000 feet (305 m) above the north foot of the mountain. Most trails leading to the summit of Double Peak are classified as "moderately strenuous."Double Peak is a popular hiking and biking area due to its many trails and convenient access points. On the north side, the mountain can be accessed by hikers and bikers through Discovery Lake Park, but this trailhead is closed to motorized vehicles. On the south side, the mountain can be accessed by vehicles through Double Peak Drive, extending from the neighborhood of San Elijo Hills. Both the North and the South access trails offer wide, partially paved surfaces. There is also a less-accessible rock and dirt trail which allows summiting the mountain from the East side. The Eastern trail has a steep incline, with rugged, staircase-like rock extrusions and at some points, loosely packed shale. The Eastern trail can only be accessed by following other trails along either the north or south face of the mountain, around to the eastern face of the mountain.Accessing the mountain from the north side, at Discovery Lake Park, a City of San Marcos information sign states that the length of the trail is 2.5mi from the park to the summit. On a clear day, the peak offers views of distant places such as Mexico, Downtown San Diego, San Clemente Island, Catalina Island, the Palos Verdes Peninsula, the Santa Ana Mountains, and the San Bernardino Mountains.

  • Quite honestly, I was surprised to see a great view from this residential community. After passing by the San Elijo Hills (which currently has model homes from 800Ks), and driving higher and higher, you can reach the top with this address from the Yelp listing. Once you're up there, there's plenty of free parking. Great just to take in the view. Or, if you are semi adventurous, you can park the car on the way up on the first small lot you see on the left. You can then walk up uphill on the side walk about 1/2 mile up. Or if you are truly adventurous, you can follow the Yelpers here and start at Discovery Lake and trek up here. Once you reach the top, there are clean restrooms and a small playground located next to a park caretaker. Great outdoorsy activities for the family.
  • Simply amazing views from this park. Great place to catch a sunset.
  • Parked here to hike up to Double Peak. Awesome hike, very well maintained trail, beautiful views.
  • One of the best views around. Really spectacular way to see the region.
  • Absolutely stunning views! One of the tallest places in the area that you can drive to. You ca see the coast line and on a good day, the ocean. There are hiking trails up and down the area as well. A must see in the area!
