Bubblegum Alley, San Luis Obispo

(2.9/5 based on 600+ reviews on the web)
An alleyway with walls covered in chewed gum, Bubblegum Alley puts you in a sticky situation. You can choose whether to be delighted or disgusted with the multicolored, gloppy walls. Since the gum first started appearing in the 1950s, the city has attempted to clean it several times--but the gum just kept coming back. Pop culture has immortalized the attraction with songs, poems, and legends. Bubblegum Alley is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, San Luis Obispo Edition.

  • This must be one of the weirdest attractions there are. It's easy to find and the area around it is very nice and clean. It doesn't smell that bad either. Definitely one of a kind.  more »
  • The alley is shorter than I expected. Neat area to walk around. Not hard to find. Cute shops all around. Street parking is easy.  more »
  • At first site, outside the alley, you're like EK! But once you step inside and start seeing alllllll the gum. Chewed and un chewed! It's pretty cool!! I totally recommend it. I read an article about S...  more »

  • We happened upon it by chance, as we Did San Luis Obispo, a charming little town. Lots of of "local color" in bubblegum alley and a sweet smelling curiosity to happen upon. Would love to know the story behind it began. But until then, it ranks with the largest ball of string in the world.but don't get tied up in expectations. Wander around wherever you are and find your own hidden gems :)😐
  • Do you give this a 5 or a 1???? It is a totally disgusting and vile thing really. I hate the smell of it and it makes you a bit queasy. It however is a mark of distinction that we have such an odd thing encouraged and sanctioned by the city leadership. Some day there will be so much gum stuck up that you will have to turn sideways to go up the alley. If you are a tourist, you just cant miss a walk through this bizarre thing. You can contribute if you are busy with a wad yourself. Maybe some day scientists will clone all the people who ever left gum here from their DNA left in the gum. This might end up being the last bank of human DNA left after the Apocalypse! Come see the vault and contribute for humanity!
  • Didn't know if I should give this 1 star or 5. The narrow alley with thousands of gum on the walls is disgusting but it's one of a kind.
  • You gotta stop by this place just for fun, yeah, the walls are covered in chewed gum (and maybe other questionable things) but still, get some gum and leave a mark here on this famous alley.
  • This was a very cool Experience. I wasnt grossed out at all hahaha
