Bubblegum Alley, San Luis Obispo

Categories: Landmarks, Tourist Spots
Inspirock Rating:
2.9/5 based on 550+ reviews on the web
An alleyway with walls covered in chewed gum, Bubblegum Alley puts you in a sticky situation. You can choose whether to be delighted or disgusted with the multicolored, gloppy walls. Since the gum first started appearing in the 1950s, the city has attempted to clean it several times--but the gum just kept coming back. Pop culture has immortalized the attraction with songs, poems, and legends. Bubblegum Alley is just one of the many highlights you can arrange to see using our online itinerary creator, San Luis Obispo Edition.

  • Worth a look if you are passing by. Wouldn't go out of my way! Lots of good food around near by though. On a beautiful Main Street.
  • If you like brushing against gum that other people have chewed, then this it he place for you... it's just not the place for me.
  • This was one of the many stops we made on our 3 week tour of California in June Been there done that. You can smell the sweet perfumed air before you get to the alley. Some people have gone to great l...  read more »
  • Do you give this a 5 or a 1???? It is a totally disgusting and vile thing really. I hate the smell of it and it makes you a bit queasy. It however is a mark of distinction that we have such an odd thing encouraged and sanctioned by the city leadership. Some day there will be so much gum stuck up that you will have to turn sideways to go up the alley. If you are a tourist, you just cant miss a walk through this bizarre thing. You can contribute if you are busy with a wad yourself. Maybe some day scientists will clone all the people who ever left gum here from their DNA left in the gum. This might end up being the last bank of human DNA left after the Apocalypse! Come see the vault and contribute for humanity!
  • Dont go on rating, you dont want to visit an ally of 4 feet wide where youc an accidently touch someone's spit and used bubble gum. I think this is more disgusting than historic 40 years of gums on the walls.
  • This was a very cool Experience. I wasnt grossed out at all hahaha
  • As disgusting as this sounds, really great history. They sell gumballs from the store next to the alley. If you want colored gum, bring your own. 😊
  • This is one of a kind and a must see if you are in Santa Barbara. Bring your own gum to stick on the wall. The amount of gum stuck on both sides of the alley is impressive. Not a sketchy back alley. I would call this a family friendly attraction.
