Bishop Peak, San Luis Obispo

#1 of 8 in Parks in San Luis Obispo
Bishop Peak is a 1546ft volcanic plug in San Luis Obispo, California. It is the tallest of the Morros or "Nine Sisters", a chain of similar peaks stretching to Morro Bay. It's mistakenly said to take its name from its resemblance to a bishop's miter, however, it is actually named in homage to the town's name (San Luis Obispo). "Obispo" is the Spanish word for Bishop, and It is frequently referred to by locals as "Bishop's Peak".GeologyLike the other Morros, Bishop Peak is primarily composed of dacite. About 20 to 25 million years ago, magma welled up underneath a layer of softer rock and solidified. The softer overlying rock has since eroded away, leaving a distinct rugged shape.WildlifeBishop Peak's thin, rocky soil supports many plants that are not common in the surrounding area. Vegetation includes an Oak woodland, sage scrub and chaparral.Woodland areas are composed of species like coast live oak and California bay trees, as well as poison oak and California blackberry. Scrub areas support many aromatic varieties of sagebrush, coyote bush, and monkeyflower.

  • The view from the top is worth seeing ! I saw it about 40 years ago and I enjoyed it just as much now -  more »
  • There's a hard climb to do about a couple of hours but the view is worth the climb (beware of the maniacs who you will see with sports equipment: we were told 45 minutes!). downhill attentive to signs because forking paths several times and it's easy to go astray

  • This hike was a lot of fun! The views along the way and at the top were amazing and well worth the trek. The hike was somewhat challenging but definitely doable, even for non-athletes like us. It took...  more »

  • Such an amazing place! It's a bit hard to find the way to the top if you haven't been there before, so make sure you have a map and/or follow the signs. There is a climbing area as well, which is more challenging then just a hike but more fun.
  • Unbelievable views. Take some hiking shoes/boots. Your feet will thank you. Took about an hour to get to the top. Be prepared with snacks, water, sunscreen and Insect repellent and proper weather clothes.
  • Depending on the time of day and weather, it's always a different experience and always just as beautiful. Its a great workout too.
  • Beautiful hike; bring plenty of water.
  • Hiking with trails, preserves Nd incredible views. Close to universities, beaches and highways.
