The San Jose Municipal Rose Garden is a rose garden located at the intersection of Naglee and Dana Avenues, San Jose, California, in the Rose Garden neighborhood. The garden, 5.5 acres in size, was once a prune orchard, but was bought by San Jose in 1927 and is now exclusively devoted to roses. It features more than 3,500 shrubs representing 189 rose varieties. As an official Display Garden for the All-America Rose Selections (AARS), the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden receives AARS award-winning roses in advance of public release. In the early 2000s, city budget cuts impacted the garden, which led to the AARS placing it on probation. In 2007 Friends of the San Jose Rose Garden (FSJRG) was established, a volunteer nonprofit organization whose mission was to restore and renovate the garden. In 2008 the AARS lifted the garden from probation and restored full accreditation, and the following year over 800 new roses were planted as part of the restoration project. On May 2, 2009 it was rededicated as an official AARS test garden, one of 23 in the US and the only one in Northern California. On December 15, 2009 the restoration of the San Jose Municipal Rose Garden was nationally recognized on the Corporation for National and Community Service website. On August 12, 2010 the AARS named it "America's Best Rose Garden", in the first nationwide contest of its kind. The winning garden was selected based on beauty, creativity and community involvement. The Municipal Rose Garden is a City of San Jose historic landmark.

  • The San Jose Municipal Rose Garden is one of the best rose gardens in the United States. It is tended to by volunteers. My last visit was in January and there weren't major blooms, of course, but I've...  more »

  • A lovely park full of plantings of beautiful roses, all labeled in case you want to track something down for your own garden. It's large enough that it rarely feels crowded, and there's ample street parking along its borders. They have spaces that can be booked for events as well. Best in spring and summer when the roses are in peak bloom, but it's a pleasant park even without the flowers. Some of the pruning is done by volunteers in winter. If you live nearby and enjoy gardening, this can be a good way to get involved.
  • It is a good place to relax, doing nothing, and breath a fresh air, but there was no rose. Probably because it was winter. I think it would be better if the garden has some space for kids, like playgrounds, or, some ornamental and colorful fishes there.
  • This is a great place to spend your time alone, or with your friend or kids. You can just get a book in the park, take a seat on one of the benches out there. Entry is free. There are street parking spaces around the park. Over here I have seen so many different shades of roses. I never had an idea. It's beautiful and its a mood changer. This garden is nicely maintained.
  • This is my favorite weekend hangout in San Jose. This rose garden is HUGE. One side of the fenced-in park is dedicated to the garden and the other side is a large grassy area where a lot of people work out and kids get to burn off their energy. Unfortunately, pets are not allowed, which is reasonable of course given the professional-grade garden but it would be nice to bring our Aussie along to enjoy the non-garden half. My fiance and I have spent hours at a time here. We bring lawn chairs or a blanket and a small cooler for snacks to camp out in the shade. Public restrooms are available and you'll enjoy watching ducks swim in the large central fountain. This is a popular spot for wedding and quinceanera photos, so you're bound to get a good look at some beautiful gowns. Professional photography must be approved first though. Volunteers occasionally visit the garden to regulate this. It's always fun to return to the garden since it looks different every time. Different roses bloom and rebloom at different times. You can also cross the street to the Egyptian museum to visit their public garden as well. There is also a restaurant and Starbucks nearby. Street parking around the garden is free, but if you live nearby, I would recommend walking. The Rose District neighborhood has some amazing architecture (my favorite are the storybook looking houses) with some rose bushes of their own.
  • Such a beautiful place full of greenery with the blossoming roses and the best time is to visit in early evenings . Ah!! Yeah don't forget to capture your moments.. if not you'll will miss some nature related memories
