  • If it wasn't for my uncle who, from Italy (him that there had been in the past), it reminded me of going to see this hidden "Pearl", I would have surely forgotten ... In fact it is not even hard to find, just go to the Financial District and a few steps away from the most famous Transamerica Pyramid, you will notice a showcase that ... has a stagecoach! Cannot go unnoticed. First, admission is free, no small feat in SF (where everything is quite pricey, even the entrances to attractions), and then the Interior of this small Museum (formerly the seat of the first Wells Fargo of SF since 1852) is very interesting. In addition to the aforementioned diligence substance, in front of which you can take souvenir photos to be printed on the spot (also free!), there are a number of panels and interactive stations that tell the history of Wells Fargo (at the beginning, age of the "gold rush", transport company Stagecoach, eventually become real Bank, one of the largest and most powerful in American territory) and with it, a piece of u.s. history. Then panels that illustrate how to drive a stagecoach (you can sit inside and see the display with the images that flow), how you ship a parcel in the nineteenth century, how does a telegraph, various references to notes (you can print a dollar like with your own face in the center of the card, always instantly and without charge), gold nuggets, you know a very interesting exhibition with staff. Not to be missed, in the heart of the Financial District. Luca

  • Pleasantly surprised by this free Museum, which offers a fun visit! Our 2 girls teenagers and ourselves we are left in the game and we had a very good time! Diligence in which you can sit inside and instead of the check... Photo system fast and free memory for a break before the diligence of the entry hall, impression of your face on a dollar, workshop writing for a term, test of telegraph station... you think you're the straight character from a western! No regrets for taking the time to visit!

  • We really enjoyed walking around the financial district. It was cool to discover a grove of redwood trees planted near the TransAmerica building and then heartbreaking to see the homeless people campe...  more »

  • Came here on a school field trip with my son. I was impressed with the amount to of things kids can learn there, especially older methods of travel and communications, such as stagecoach and telegraph. You can pick up and use some of them to get experience what it was like. We had a guided tour for the field trip so that was very nice. It's directly connected to their main branch. Best of all, the museum is free to come in and browse. They are closed on the weekend though so plan accordingly.
  • I found this by accident just wandering around taking photos. Such a nice surprise and free! Free is good. There is a great display of money and coinage from many different banks back when they all printed their own. Scales gold was weighed on and lots of photos. A Stagecoach display to get into and try and imagine how in the world 9 people would ever fit in there and spend days traveling together! Push a button and there is the Stagecoach driver telling you what to expect and scenery going past the window. If you sit in the driver's seat there are different videos showing and telling you how the Horses are driven, harnessed and otherwise controlled and directed by the driver. This place is only a few blocks from Montgomery street BART right on Montgomery. Well worth dropping in to spend a little time
  • Nice little place to visit when one is in the area. I especially liked how it was quiet and not too crowded, so I can take my time with each exhibit. I visited on a weekday in the early afternoon, so that could have been a factor.
  • Awesome place to take 4th grade class as it toes right into the state standards for gold rush era. Artifacts to see and play with!
  • This was an unexpected surprise. First, you can't beat free. But it's an actual museum quality experience. The displays are informative, interactive and very well done. I can't recommend this highly enough. It's worth spending an hour or two here.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
