The place is a bookstore with used, some vinyl and CDs. good vintage. It has a space dedicated to Jack Kerouak and the Beat generation. At the bottom of the premises there is a small museum. For lovers of biographies of illegal characters and under. A good excuse to visit Chinatown and some places connected with the writer then.

I visited the museum with my 3 kids aged 17, 12 and 11 on our first afternoon in San Francisco just after a stop across the street at the bookstore. The museum is filled with artifacts and narratives ...  more »

I had fairly low expectations for this "attraction," but even my low expectations were dashed to even lower levels. It's an $8.00 admission, and you'll do well to keep the $8 in your pocket. The museu...  more »

Interesting exhibition about the Beat generation. Very informative, great place to drop by if you are interested in literature. Nice conversation with the guy running it.

Fun experience. Very educational. You can always ask the counter guy about what is Beat or watch the film in their theater room called the Source

Cool little museum. The staff was so friendly. This is a great place to take teenagers who are interested in learning about the Beat Poets. Go to City Lights bookstore and check out Jack Kerouac Alley to round out the trip.

Very cool shop. I was walking by and was compelled by an intangible force to enter and explore.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
