Steinhart Aquarium, San Francisco

4.2
#32 of 46 in Parks in San Francisco
Steinhart Aquarium is one of the most biodiverse and interactive aquariums in the world. Home to 38,000 animals and more than 1,000 species of plants and animals, it offers guests an unprecedented view of underwater life and provides insight into the critical role that aquatic environments play in life on Earth.

The original Steinhart Aquarium opened in Golden Gate Park in 1923. It quickly became world famous for its novel exhibits and unusual animals, and was the model for many of the public aquariums that opened in the years that followed. Several components of the old Steinhart Aquarium have returned in the new aquarium, which opened back in the park in 2008, including the dramatic entrance columns, the vaulted ceiling, the sea horse railing, and the Swamp (alligator) exhibit. New technologies and advances in animal husbandry have made it possible for the Steinhart to create a suite of stunning new aquarium exhibits, including the world’s largest and deepest indoor coral reef, a four-level rainforest display, and more.

I so enjoy the museum with my kids. This trip ended in failure. While looking for place to park, we came upon a group of protesters. They were yelling and approaching people. I was not feeling safe wi...  more »

It had been some time since we visited the aquarium in the park. It has changed quite a bit, with some new additions in the building. The planetarium, the animal exhibit, and alligator groto are still...  more »

Fantastic aquarium. Way bigger than expected. You have several floor to ceiling pool displays, with great variety. Well maintained and very informative. Good for a 3 to 4 hr adventure.

Back in the day it was fun coming here before the rennovation when they tried to make the place fancy by spending $1 billion. And in 1989, we got to go behind the scenes because we had a museum pass. There was a cute cuttle fish hanging out in a rubber maid that wanted some attention. I used to like the crocodile open area. There was a Giant Pacific salamander in a tank my mom said she saw one when she was a kid in 1950s. Back then the Giant Pacific salamander was rare too.

This is a great little aquarium! Seemed bigger than I expected as we wandered through it, with some fun interactive displays, a touch tank, and great information about the fish being shown. There are also dive shows a couple times a day in one of the big tanks, mostly aimed at kids.

Beautiful aquarium in the Academy of Sciences! Great place for kids and adults. Highly recommend going for the coral reef dive in the afternoons -- you get to watch a diver at work and ask them questions!

Had a great time here. I enjoyed this much better than Monterey Bay aquarium. Price was certainly cheaper. Lots of space. Lots of cool exhibits.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
