Operated and managed by Aquarium of the Bay, the Sea Lion Center is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that offers free interpretive programs to compliment one of San Francisco’s most popular attractions. Over six million annual visitors will be able to learn all about these boisterous animals through exhibits and one-on-one interactions with naturalists. Guests can learn about these charismatic mammals, their history at PIER 39 and ongoing impacts and challenges to their habitat, as well as what they, as visitors, can do to help. The Sea Lion Center includes a classroom and exhibit space located directly above the sea lions regular hangout on PIER 39’s K-Dock.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.

  • When you're up on Pier 39, you really need to see the Sea Lions. We were told beforehand that they can be really smelly, but the wind must have been blowing in the other direction on the times we visi...  more »
  • Such fun, these great big lumps of seal fur, barking and nipping and sleeping, such sleeping. Like cats, but really animated too. Great for kids.  more »
