San Francisco Bay, San Francisco

#2 of 401 in Nature in California
San Francisco sits on the tip of a peninsula, surrounded by San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate strait, and the Pacific Ocean. To explore the bay's shoreline, walk, skate, or bike along the Bay Trail, which is paved within the city. To explore the region from the water, board one of many tour boats. Known for its strong westerly winds, the natural harbor is a mecca for sailors, windsurfers, and kitesurfers. The bay is also a natural nursery for native crab, halibut, and salmon, as well as being a key link in the "Pacific Flyway," a major north-south route used by migratory birds. If you want to hang out by the water, especially on a sunny day, join locals at Marina Green (30 hectare) 74 acre expanse of grass between Fort Mason and the Presidio. • Great stores, eateries, and during the winter you can watch the seals and walruses fight for the best spots on the peer. It is a great spot to spend an afternoon.  more »
  • This was lovely to walk down and experience all the shops and restaurants, plenty of choices. We ate at lovely Mexican place, would recommend a visit to the Bay.  more »
  • Look: I think San Francisco with a climate very much like Rio de Janeiro. PQ? Because people are detached, open to contact with others, and with wonderful beaches, made our. So, I feel very comfortable in this American city. Although the Bahia de San Fran is Wonderful, leaves nothing to be desired for our of RJ, the consciousness in your preservation, activity that we still want!! So, explained why I feel at home here: the Emotional climate, is the same as ours. But Muiiitoo cold Hot!! Make no mistake: in the summer, in July, is colder q in winter!!! Watch out!

  • The bay has extensive waterways all around SF, which are so much fun to explore by various ferries. It's always a treat to be on the water. The views are incredible and the fresh winds will free you from all the clutter of daily life issues.
  • I mean, for sailing, either there isn't any wind at all, or it is a small craft advisory, either one or the other with barely anything in between. Water is murky and choppy with shallow mud flats everywhere at low tide, wind and tide always seem to be against where I want to go, and be careful not to get run over by a tanker. The "slot" between Berkeley and the Golden Gate Bridge, around Alcatraz, is scenic and there is always at least a little wind there, but otherwise has most of the same problems as elsewhere else. I guess harbor porpoises and fleet week is cool. If you really like sailing, stay in Southern California!
  • SAN FRANCISCO ... I fish & photo #the bay Find a good boat out of SF harbor $140 salmon runs and $15 Bay Tours for priceless photo ops, for fishing The Lovely Martha #protip
  • First time here in SanFrancisco,Ca. with Johnny Gutierrez Adventure Tour Bus.sailed on a boat seen Alcatraz close up ,didn't get to tour in Alcatraz Prison but coming back for a tour. Pier 39 with the sealions had a really exciting day. So if your looking to spend the day in the bay, or pismo, maybe your feeling lucky you want to spend your day at the casino. Adventures Tours owner Johnny Gutierrez can make it happen.Great personal tour guide also. So if you don't drive ,or renting seems to pricey.Great price to pay.I highly recommended
  • This is a beautiful bay, so full of activity with stunning views. There are ferry’s heading to Alcatraz, touring the harbour to see the Golden Gate Bridge, transporting workers from Sausalito. Locals sailing.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
