Saints Peter and Paul Church, San Francisco
(4.4/5 based on 70+ reviews on the web)
Saints Peter and Paul Church is a Roman Catholic Church in San Francisco's North Beach neighborhood. Located (somewhat ironically, due to 666 being number of the beast) at 666 Filbert Street, it is directly across from Washington Square, San Francisco and is administered by the Salesians of Don Bosco. It is known as "La cattedrale italiana dell'Ovest," or "The Italian Cathedral of the West," and has served as the home church and cultural center for San Francisco's Italian-American community since its consecration.DescriptionDuring 1926-1927, the church was the target of radical anti-catholic anarchists, who instituted five separate bomb attacks against the building in the space of one year. On March 6, 1927, police shot and killed one man and seriously wounded another, Celsten Eklund, a radical anarchist and local soapbox orator, as the two men attempted to light the fuse of a large dynamite bomb in front of the church. The dead man, known only as 'Ricca', was never fully identified; Eklund died of his wounds some time later without giving any information about his co-conspirators.In recent years, Saints Peter and Paul has also become the home church for the city's Chinese-American Roman Catholic population, offering weekly masses in Italian, Mandarin, and English. Mass in Latin is offered monthly as well.

  • A church recently, without any claim to have works of artistic value. Beautiful location, with the front of the green. It is known simply as Marilyn Monroe married Joe DiMaggio (marriage, they say, not true!).

  • SS. Peter and Paul Church-the Catholic Church, which is located across from Washington Square Park. The Church was built at the beginning of the last century. Inside the Church is very gorgeous Interior and pure white marble, gilding. In the Church is the altar, icons, beautiful mosaics, as well as a statue of an Angel with a bowl of holy water. The atmosphere in the Church-pacified.

  • This is beautiful to go see at night. Must-see!
  • Wow a beautiful church I can say, good at architect and lovely mural painting on the ceiling and on the glasses so stunning . The best church to visit in sfo. It's better than grace cathedral.
  • Another one of the beautiful churches in San Francisco. Apparently Marilyn Monroe and Joe DiMaggio didn't get married here, but they took wedding photos on the church steps. :D
  • Did not go in so i cant attest to the interior but was a great landmark outside with a nice park across the street. I was getting a bit lost but found this church and then signs to coit tower where i alter ventured
  • One of the only churches in the U.S. named after not one but two saints! Exciting.
