Presidio of San Francisco, San Francisco

4.6
#3 of 35 in Historic Sites in San Francisco
National Park Military Facility
It may come as a surprise that Presidio of San Francisco, the oldest continuously used military base in the country, also boasts acres upon acres of beautiful parkland. Despite its military involvement, the area is filled with forests, creeks, and walking trails where you can escape the urban bustle. Seek out hills with excellent views of the Golden Gate Bridge, the city, and the ocean. Get a dose of history with a tour the cfficers' club, a historical building once used for U.S. Army officers and their families to socialize. If you aren't sure what to do first, get a map and more information from the staff at the visitor's center. • If you get tired of the crowded piers then the Presidio is a great place to unplug and enjoy this historic site. Lots of history, the Walt Disney Museum, Golden gate bridge and the view of the Bay.  more »
  • Certainly the Presidio is a very relaxing Park, we were there on Sunday morning, the weather wasn't the best (fog) which gave the area a certain charm but made less vivid colors. The Visitor Center offers information on routes and sells several publications on the Park and the city, as well as various souvenirs. Aside from a Starbucks and another bar (closed), I haven't seen many restaurants on site, is a little area full of houses or shops. On the grounds near the Visitor Center there was some sort of outdoor party picnic and many stands of street food (I believe it's called Grid); We have not tasted anything but seemed so inviting ... • One of my favorite places in the city to take people from out of town as it's always a bit of a surprise. Installed for the world's fair, the awe inspiring structure is a great place to wander as well as get a few good pictures. Occasionally there will be a lovely exhibit. The pin ball room can't be missed for an incredible selection for a quarter a play
  • Go here. Walk. Bike. Just sit and enjoy. Unbeatable views of the bay and the Golden Gate Bridge. Home of Crissy Field as well as much much more. If you like climbing Planet Granite is the best gym I have have been to for bouldering. Ropes are also top notch.
  • Man, the Presidio is a secret place most locals knows about. You are not a local unless you pass through here. There are endless places to hike, jog, run, or simply ride your bicycle. If you love photography, the sunrise and sunsets here overlooking Golden Gate Bridge is breathtaking. I have recently taken an interest in learning about native wildflowers (during my downtime) which explains my recent visit at the Presidio. Hard to believe growing up in San Francisco, I get to enjoy all this nature in the heart of San Francisco. Cheers!
  • Absolutely beautiful! It's a wonderful place to live and visit... In fact my only criticism is the lack of nearby shops, restaurants, supermarkets, bars, etc... There should be at least limited options available within the district itself.
  • During the week the parking here is pretty good. It cost $1.25 per hour to park at most areas around the presidio. There's a lot of residential here but many trails and natural areas to enjoy. There's even Baker Beach and Crissy field which are very busy on the weekends.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
