Presidio Golf Course, San Francisco

3.7
#56 of 64 in Outdoors in San Francisco
The prestigious Presidio golf course opened for public play in 1895 and has quickly gained a reputation as one of the nation's top public courses. Located just minutes from downtown San Francisco, this 18-hole course plays 6,500 yards of challenging golf winding through beautiful Eucalyptus and Monterey Pine trees in The City's trademark hills.

Designed with tight fairways and strategically placed bunkers, this 18-hole "hilly" golf course offers a unique challenge for golfers of all abilities. Orginally designed by Robert Wood Johnstone, the course was expanded in 1910 by Johnstone in collaboration with Wiliam McEwan and redesigned and lengthened in by the British firm of Fowler & Simpson in 1921.

If you go here by taxi ask them to take you to the Presidio Cafe as that is where the pro shop is. The shop is well stocked and the staff were very accommodating. We received a complimentary gift bag ...  more »

Played at Presidio with my hubby and 2 other friends who had played here previously. Hubby and I had never been to this course as we were visiting from out of state. We rented clubs from the club hous...  more »

First time here. Very challenging course. The entire course is played on a hill so you are almost never hitting on flat ground. Lots of trees so even though not the longest course, a challenge for any...  more »

I've played here hundreds of times and love the layout and it plays great when in good condition. But yesterday's round was unacceptable. Over 5 hours for 16 holes. Marshall was on us first 3 holes with no where to go. Then disappeared. Group in front of us was 2 holes behind by the 10th hole. I'm glad I got the local rate. If I would have paid $130 for a 5 hour 16 hole round I would have been pissed.

Course was in really really bad shape due to rains. Flight delay, missed tee time. Played the next day. Apologized for missing tee time. NO MENTION of the $100 cancellation fee I was charged for the previous day. Nice!

Terrible experience. I paid $50 for the round, which you think would be a value, but it wasn't worth it. Course maintenance is sub par and the management was awful. Each hole had at minimum 2 groups, usually 3. We stopped playing after 4 holes and left.

An old, historic, traditional tree lined golf course. Number two and four are stunners, but many holes can be categorized as such, too. Really tight golf course where you have to think about which club to use off the tee. The fairways are lined by huge, tall trees that are synonymous to San Francisco. Fees are expensive (after all, it is San Francisco), but the course is so beautiful and with the San Francisco views you don't think for one second that you've overpaid. A real treat whenever you may be in the San Francisco area.

The course was in good shape, but there are too many blind shots. The staff was as rude as I've ever experienced. The worst part of the day was the carts and their awful GPS, which will only run at 2mph starting at 150yds out. I understand regulating cart use w in 75-100 yards, but 150 is unreasonable. The carts would also stop working at completely random areas of the course, saying that the area was 'restricted.' Total joke. So many better options around.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
