  • I can't seem to stay out of Paxton Gate for more than a few days at a time. As a resident of the Mission District, I pass this shop on Valencia St. almost everyday, and it's like a tug of war to keep ...  more »

  • Such a cool place. The little mice in particular killed me (is that insensitive?) And the collection in general was staggering. There was a broader range of items than I was expecting - I really dug the esoteric posters like the phrenology chart, and the assorted minerals and butterfly nick nacks were all dope. I can't complain about the high prices because I have no idea how much money and work go into taxidermy, but I went from a prospective buyer to a sheepish window shopper real quick...
  • So much to take in! Everyone I know loves visiting this shop, my three year old niece, my nine year old nephew, and all of my "grown-up" friends too. I go there to buy gifts, jewelry, plants, books, and so much more. It's a beautiful and interesting place to visit, even if you're not shopping. GO!
  • I like this place, I used to love this place. Today it was so crowded and stuffy and hot, nobody was moving or buying, it was almost impossible to get from the entrance to the back of the store, and it's not a great distance. I just left, hoping their website might be good. Too bad.
  • I was in awe as soon as I stepped in. The staff is very helpful and friendly. Their bone and insect collection is incredible.
  • Buy everything. There is an amazing assortment of oddities here it feels like a Johnny Depp movie...but better bc there is no Johnny Depp.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
