Ocean Beach, San Francisco

Ocean Beach is a beach on the West coast of San Francisco, California, United States, bordering the Pacific Ocean. It is adjacent to Golden Gate Park, the Richmond District, and the Sunset District. The Great Highway runs alongside the beach, and the Cliff House and the site of the former Sutro Baths sit at the northern end. The beach is a part of the Golden Gate National Recreation Area, which is administered by the National Park Service.During the late spring and summer, San Francisco's characteristic foggy weather frequently envelops the beach. The average temperature for last 5 years has been 55.8 °F. However, the beach is popular with surfers and participants in bonfire parties. More beach-friendly weather occurs in late fall and early spring, when fog is less prevalent. The water at Ocean Beach is noteworthy for its strong currents and waves, which makes it popular among serious surfers. The water is cold, due in part to a process known as upwelling, in which frigid water from below the ocean surface rises to replace the surface water that moves away from the beach as a result of the Coriolis effect. The rapid rip currents and cold water make the ocean dangerous for casual swimmers and even those who simply want to set foot in it, and swimmers have been swept away and drowned. Nevertheless, the beach is one of the Bay Area's top surfing spots. The southern portion of the beach by Sloat Boulevard is one of the cleanest in the state.Make Ocean Beach part of your personalized San Francisco itinerary using our San Francisco vacation trip planner.

beach is very big. sand is nice. Its very close to cliff house. In september its impossible to swim here, because its freezing.
Pretty awesome beach area. The huge wave blocking walls are pretty cool all tagged up with graffiti all along the back side of this beach. Pretty scenic ocean view all along this beach. Great place to go for a jog and what not. Just wish it wasn't as windy as it typically is!
One of the jewels of SF, despite not having many bathrooms or infrastructure. Big beach, and great way to enjoy the California Coast when you need a break from city life. Should note -- it's grey and foggy here more than most neighborhoods in SF.
It was a place to park and that was it. The beach is dirty and smelled awful. It was cold and foggy despite being August. The entrance to the beach smelled like human urine which is what I be live was wet all over the sidewalk. A lot of ocean death washes up here. Not a place I would take my kids.
Nice to have a beach that is located right in the city. Close to Golden Gate Park and accessible by Muni. Often foggy and cold in the mornings, but can be sunny by the afternoon.
It's a good place to chill and enjoy the sun. People are jogging on the side walk, others are just sitting around by the side walk, some are laying on the sand tanning. The parking area is big and there's always space available. There's a good restaurant nearby on the other side of the road where one can have a meal before of after.
