Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.

  • What can I say, the clerks and floor personnel were aces especially Mani, he's a rock star there. He was so welcoming. As soon as we entered the store and were close to his area, he was right there ma...  more »

  • Exceptional high end upscale boutique department store with world class fashions, bridal, home d├ęcor and cosmetics. Impeccable staff, wonderful concierge services, and amazing staff attentive to your needs. Prices here are not for the middle class types, so expect upper class retail tags and don't be cheap thinking you will get a great shopping experience if you don't have any money to spend and are just 'browsing'. Dress to impress and be prepared to spend for the best service. Easily the finest department store in San Francisco, and its reputation is hard earned and well deserved. Highly recommended.
  • Great selection of unique men's clothing. However, only come here if you want to be insulted, laughed at, and disrespected by the men's sales associates. Go to Saks or Bloomingdale's if you want almost all of the same brands and good service.
  • Luxury items department store but cafe inside is serving with good food.
  • Spent $400 on a blouse to be insulted by the cashier who made the extraordinarily rude comments that I still had "such a strong foreign accent" despite having lived in the city for a few years... I couldn't believe it. Personnel in shoes department is very professional, but the Cusp floor with trendy brands is in complete disarray. No wonder why people prefer shopping online with such awful service. 2 stars... because they really have an amazing selection in the store overall and some folks there are really pro -unfortunately they are no longer majority.
  • We go here every Boxing day. The last time I went my steak was fatty and over cooked. Oh and the front of house staff are very condescending. But, you can't beat the beautiful glass ceiling and massive Christmas tree for a wonderful holiday treat.
