#25 of 44 in Parks in San Francisco
Lincoln Park in San Francisco, California, was dedicated to President Abraham Lincoln in 1909 and includes about 100acre of the northwestern corner of the San Francisco Peninsula.Lincoln Park is the western terminus of the Lincoln Highway, the first road across the United States of America. The land on which Lincoln Park stands was a cemetery in use in the late 1860s and possibly earlier. In 1902, golf enthusiasts laid out a three-hole course on part of the land. In 1909, the Board of Supervisors turned the land over to the Parks Commission, and cemetery relocation began. The golf course expanded to 14 holes by 1914, then to a full 18 holes in 1917. During this period of development some 50acre of the original tract were turned over to the federal government to be added to the neighboring Fort Miley Military Reservation. The Lincoln Highway, with its western terminus at Lincoln Park, was conceived and mapped in 1913 as the first coast-to-coast road across America, traversing 14 states. The original western terminus marker of the highway was located at the north end of the plaza and fountain in front of the Legion of Honor. Today, a replica of the western terminus marker and an interpretive plaque are located at the southwest corner of the plaza, next to the bus stop. The replica marker was placed in 2002 during the revitalized Lincoln Highway Association's 10th Annual National Convention by the Association's California Chapter.

  • Delightful artistically tiled steps, but yes, be careful not to slip if the steps are moist. It's quite an extraordinary artwork, and a very special joy for those little ones who love to go up and down, and up and down again! Children's playground nearby, and these steps lead to the beautiful Lincoln Park and world famous Lincoln Park golf course. Much to enjoy here. Maybe this is a stairway to Heaven?
  • Very nice mosaic stairway. Locally supported and donated. Some tiles have donor names baked into them.
  • Fantastic detail, it's hard to imagine how much work has gone into these steps and the view down California Street from the top is excellent.
  • With a low morning sun directly opposite the steps turn gold.
  • Genius world class public artwork that definitely should be better known.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
