  • I generally visit the dog park area at Lafayette Park. The dog area is fenced in about 80% and is mostly covered in AstroTurf, which is particularly great in damp weather. The dogs stay pretty clean but can slide around a little bit when they are in full sprint. I also like that the dogs visiting the park tend to be pretty sociable and there is a lot of supervision, so I feel that my labradoodle is pretty safe. The rest of the park is quite clean and pleasant, so is good for strolls before and after the dog park.
  • This was a fun park we stumbled upon. Our 3-yr-old loved it. Many families and kids were there. Felt safe, and had pretty clean public restrooms. Fantastic climbing structures for kids - a creative design of large rocks for natural climbing.
  • Lovely park in relaxed, residential Pacific Heights. I happened upon it the other week while walking my dog and discovered that it had a dog park! I now take my pup there a couple times a week. It's nicely wooded, too, and has meadows too, so it's a great spot for a picnic. Bring your dog, a bottle of wine, and your special someone!
  • One of the best parks I've seen for children or pets. Extensive multistory play structure with chain bridges, climbing nets, antique water pumps, and several innovative slides set in beautiful stone facades. Plentiful seating for birthday parties and relatively easy parking.
  • Lafayette Park is nestled on top of a hill providing beautiful, sweeping views of the city and the bay, the neighborhood's San Franciscan architecture. This is a great place to take your kids or your dog as there are parks for both to go with plenty of green space to run in.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
