Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.

  • A place to take a break . With all the walking up and down the hills of San Francisco, this is a great place take a break and catch your breath on a sunny day. This seems to be a local favorite as man...  more »
  • Surrounded by important buildings, Grace Cathedral and the big hotels, very pretty park well-maintained. Restful spot.  more »
  • In a busy city like San Francisco every park, big and small, gives the city air to breathe. This is a small park but when you're for instance attending a conference at the Fairmont it's worth visiting...  more »

  • Half A Sweet Square Block of elevated park space to enjoy. The water fountain, the relatively new children's play area, the view of the surrounding buildings, and you could really stop and smell the roses on the edges of the park. I really like the fall colors from the tress on the rim of the park. I enjoyed just sitting here for an hour before I went to a Concert at The Masonic.
  • Eerily beautiful and charming at night, evening, and twilight. A beautifully well kept neighborhood park, with plenty of comfy benches, as well as constant Rec & Parks Dept. Published wifi. Easy to miss from the street because it looks like the hedges of private property, unless you are aware it exists.
  • Nice park to go with your dogs, although they're not happy about it. Playground for kids, which means it's best to keep animals on a leash, although many people don't do so.
  • The park isn't much to look at but this is a cool part of town. Large upscale hotels all around. You can catch a few cool views if San Fran up here.
  • Great little neighborhood park where all the locals take their kids and dogs! It's clean and peaceful, doesn't feel weird or anything. Although there might be some sketchy characters walking around occasionally. I take my dog here during the day, because it's close to our hotel and there isn't a big crowd of people. Most people are friendly and nice. However, I definitely have never taken my dog out to this park at night past 8 pm.
