Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.

  • This well-established San Francisco institution is THE spot to find unique gifts, upscale home goods and many other exquisite items you were unaware even existed.-- The knowledgeable staff is nearby to answer questions and assist without hovering over your every move. Gump’s itself captures a certain “feel” for The City having been around for more than 150 years. In fact, you will find many items throughout the store have direct roots in The Bay Area. --
  • I have been a Gump's customer since I first entered the store years ago. I receive their catalogs at home and they are fun to leaf through. However, there is a huge difference between the beautiful unique items in their store, and the items offered in their catalogs and online. (Exception: their women's apparel and furniture). I have been both delighted and disappointed in items ordered from these catalogs. One has to take a leap of faith when ordering, so just be forewarned. I am so looking forward to visiting them in San Francisco again next weekend. I love the Asian art pieces in their store that are unique and beautiful.
  • I loooooove Gumps. I just can't afford anything from there unless theyre having an end of the season sale. But it's beautiful! I just enjoy looking
  • When I was little, my dad had a fossilized fish that I always thought was just the coolest thing. Now, thanks to the Evolution Store, as of last night, I have one too. Even if you're not planning to shop, I'd recommend anyone passing through Soho to check this place out. It's like a natural history museum's gift shop - except with a better selection of items. One of the best things about it is that they cater to a wide range of customers. They've got something to fit every budget, from little trinkets, animal teeth, preserved bugs, etc. for under $20, to museum-quality specimens in the thousands of dollars. I've found the staff to be friendly and helpful, and they don't mind people coming in just to browse.
  • I recently went in after seeing Christmas decor being put out in late October, and while I looked like a disheveled, under-dressed conference attendee meandering the floor, Scott Grim treated me like I was a buyer with intentions to purchase, and sure enough, I did do business. I purchased the item pictured and had it shipped to my mother for Christmas decor, and while I was promised 7-10 days, she received it in under 4. Excellent service and a wonderful store to boot.
