  • My husband is a fan of the Grateful Dead, so he wanted to see the house since we were in the area. The walk was easy and it was fun to see all of the beautiful houses in the area.  more »
  • Hi, this "House" in San Francisco, loved or hated, is considered the hotbed for creativity, intelligence and independence, as many artists, intellectuals and musicians consider this House a legend.

  • As I understand this is a big piece of history for Deadheads and casual fans alike. I took the 3 min walk over to see it myself and snap a pic or two for my boyfriend who is a deadhead and unable to m...  more »

  • It’s not a museum or monument or anything like that, it’s just a regular house that I’d assume just regular people live in. I took a picture from the sidewalk and had no issues, but I’d be respectful of the fact that people live there when checking it out. There’s a gate in front of the stoop so recreating the classic photo is a no-go. Otherwise a cool piece of Dead history!
  • Never been inside. Am not sure that option is even possible. Have definitely chilled on the front porch a time or three. No problems there. Just don't show up with a crowd, don't do anything that might draw a crowd, and be sure to clean up any trash and take it with you when you leave. An experience every true Dead Head should have at least once.
  • Well, it's a house... Just that. And one of the least beautiful ones. But yeah, if you're a fan of the Grateful Dead then you might appreciate it.
  • Cool stop in you are in the area. Don't make a special trip, however.
  • That's cool. Didn't know it was the Grateful Dead house until now. Enjoyed the ride!

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
