Grand View Park, also referred to as Turtle Hill by local residents, is a small, elevated park in the Sunset District, San Francisco, California. It is surrounded by 14th and 15th Avenues, as well as Noriega Street.Despite its small size, or about the size of a city block, the park is important geologically and botanically and offers views of downtown San Francisco, Golden Gate Park, to the Pacific Ocean, the Marin headlands, and across to the Sutro Tower. The summit of Turtle Hill rises to about. It is an outcrop of chert, which is part of the heterogeneous assemblage known as the Franciscan Formation, or Franciscan Assemblage, the primary geologic feature on which the city of San Francisco is founded, here covered with a thin layer of sand. It provides one of the last remaining habitats within the city for a number of native plants, including the endangered Franciscan wallflower and dune tansy, and also bush lupin, beach strawberry, bush monkey flower, and coyote bush. The hill is crowned with Monterey cypress trees.

  • Can be really chilly but take a blanket up to the top. The views of the Pacific Ocean and even the a part of the golden gate bridge are worth it and it isn't usually too crowded.  more »
  • The Grand View Park is not huge but the view is fantastic on a sunny day. You have to climb up some steps and walk on a short sandy trail, with walking shoes no problem at all. What you expect is stun...  more »
  • Very good view of the city of San Francisco, has an excellent height came by chance to the place, because we lost on the bus. The idea was to reach Twin Peaks and down we ask a local person and he told us that the Grandview Park view was superior to Twin Peaks and we really loved the place, you have to climb some important steps , and then goes up gradually around the mountain and the City Centre comes at last to the vantage point, overlooking the Pacific Ocean, the Golden Gate, Twin Peaks,

  • Gorgeous, panoramic views that come at the low cost of traversing a slightly unreasonable amount of stairs (particularly if you used the previous staircases to get here). Worth every bit of energy used; it's definitely among the best views in the city.
  • This is one place that is worth the climb from 16th Avenue tiled steps. It's only a very small area at the top but on a clear day the views are truly amazing. You'll probably need to make use of the 1 bench that is up there and I would recommend that you take something warm to wear as even on the hottest days it can be freezing cold up here.
  • The best urban hike in the universe, as far as I am concerned! Do not miss two series of mosaic stairs nearby, the Hidden Garden Steps on Kirkham and 15th Ave, and Tiled Steps on 16th Ave and Moraga. Beautiful panoramic view, way better than Twin Peaks, close enough to the ocean to watch the waves, gorgeous sunset and sunrise...
  • Awesome view of San Francisco. You'll get a good workout climbing those steps!
  • A sweaty climb up the stairs from 15th, but the views are stunning and definitely worth it. On the day I was here the practice for the Fleet aeroplane aerial displays was happening and was amazing to watch from the distant elevated position. 360 views from the park are amazing and should be on your must do list.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
