Nature / Park
Grand View Park, also referred to as Turtle Hill by local residents, is a small, elevated park in the Sunset District, San Francisco, California. It is surrounded by 14th and 15th Avenues, as well as Noriega Street.Despite its small size, or about the size of a city block, the park is important geologically and botanically and offers views of downtown San Francisco, Golden Gate Park, to the Pacific Ocean, the Marin headlands, and across to the Sutro Tower. The summit of Turtle Hill rises to about. It is an outcrop of chert, which is part of the heterogeneous assemblage known as the Franciscan Formation, or Franciscan Assemblage, the primary geologic feature on which the city of San Francisco is founded, here covered with a thin layer of sand. It provides one of the last remaining habitats within the city for a number of native plants, including the endangered Franciscan wallflower and dune tansy, and also bush lupin, beach strawberry, bush monkey flower, and coyote bush. The hill is crowned with Monterey cypress trees.

  • Walked up to the park after exploring the tiled steps (literally just 5 mins away). Amazing view of downtown San Francisco, the Pacific Ocean and you can even see a portion of the Golden Gate bridge. ...  more »
  • After completing our tour of the tiled steps (please see separate review) I decided to venture to the top of the hill where Grand View park is located. I was hoping to get some good shots of the city ...  more »

  • I love the view from this park! Although I don't think this is much of a park more than a viewpoint. There are several entrances to the top of this "park" and both have quite a few steps. I haven't been here in a few years and I noticed that one of the entrances where there used to be wooden stairs has now been renovated and the wooden stairs are much more solid with metal handrails. Very nice improvement! One thing I've noticed as well is that it is typically very chilly up here. Regardless of how nice it is outside. Perhaps it's the elevation? So dress in layers if you plan to stay up here for long. And it is also rather windy.
  • I've been living in Daly City for 5 years now and never heard of the place until i accidentally drove by with my family. It's an amazing discovery, the stairs is really eye catching and colorful, a good exercise with an amazing 360 degree view from the top of the hill. I felt like a tourist from out of town after i reached the top. This experience drove me to discover more interesting parks nearby that are free and family friendly.
  • This place has a great view and nice tiled steps. It is a bit crowded and out of the way.
  • This is a small viewpoint at the top of the photogenic Moraga Ave mosaic staircase. Views from the top of the hill are pretty, but not as spectacular as from nearby Mount Davidson or Twin Peaks. Very limited street parking, but easy to walk here from the Irving Street business district to the north.
  • Such an awesome find. Must visit during sib set and watching the city at night.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
