Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.

  • While strolling along the streets of San Francisco, we came upon the Crocker Galleria. This is a stunning glass pavilion soaring three levels high. It is a semi-indoor mall full of specialty shops and...  more »
  • Because you are off the street and away from traffic, this small shopping center is pleasant. Not sure how successful it is as there are empty store fronts. Some places to eat.  more »
  • A blah shopping thingie that is more for workers than you tourists. Same stuff as in every other mall.  more »

  • Very nice and quiet upscale Financial District hide out, perfect for having coffee and lunch on the rooftop terraces. Mainly small restaurants with a few high end stores, limited variety of shops. Clientele is mostly young professionals, businessmen, officer workers, tourists and few locals.
  • Very nice mall. Interesting stores. Great semi-outdoor seating. Two rooftop gardens with nice seating in a park setting are good spots for a break to linger or do some work on the laptop.
  • Nice selection of quick food spots on the third floor. Glass ceiling gives great ambience and lighting. There's a rooftop garden which is nice when it's not too cold or windy. Great little farmer's market every Thursday.
  • Covered Open air mall with lots of shops and roof top terraces that most people don't know exist...
  • Every Tuesday the entire ground floor is cleared out for Farmer's Market from 10am-2pm. Highly recommended!
