Crissy Field, San Francisco

4.6
#8 of 46 in Parks in San Francisco
Enjoy the outdoors under a spectacular view of the Golden Gate Bridge at Crissy Field. Known as the Presidio’s front door, the former air base-turned-into-a-park is a favorite recreational area for both locals and visitors. The area is clean, safe, and well maintained and is particularly popular with cyclists and joggers. If you want to relax, you can enjoy the sandy beach or go for a picnic. The kids enjoy wide-open areas to play, while the pet owners can take their dogs off the leash and let them splash in the surf. Bring sunglasses and layered clothes, because the San Francisco weather can be chilly and windy, even in the summer months.   Using our world travel planner, San Francisco attractions like Crissy Field can form part of a personalized travel itinerary.

  • A flat bit on your cycle ride to the bridge. No need to push along the road, there is a path beside the water most of the way. Parking & toilets.  more »
  • Located between the District of the Marina and the magnificent Golden Gate Bridge, Crissy Field is a beach town popular with families whose highlight is undoubtedly the wonderful panorama of the imposing Golden Gate. Nice view of the city skyline, Alcatraz and Bay where as always dominates the skyscraper Transamerica. Personally I arrived at Golden Gate taking a beautiful walk from Fort Mason, passing through the District of the Marina, Crissy Field and Fort Point (a bit tiring but totally worth it).

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
