China Beach, San Francisco

4.5
#25 of 46 in Parks in San Francisco
Swim, kite surf, or simply relax at China Beach. The shallow water provides a safe place for kids and less experienced swimmers to safely enjoy themselves. Bring food to prepare on one of the outdoor grills and picnic tables. Kite surfing enthusiasts can take advantage of the wide shoreline and good winds here. More secluded than others in the area, this beach offers a quiet getaway from crowds. No kiosks or shops--but you get a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge on a clear day. The Internet says there are tide pools at China beach at low tide well not really tide pools, puddles of water in the rocks with mollusks but nothing else. but it is a neat beach to see with a view of...  more »

On our last full day in sf (a Saturday on a holiday weekend), we wanted to get out of downtown to get away from the crowds. We took an Uber from Union Square out to China Beach (not a short drive, but...  more »

Great view if the Golden Gate & Easy to access this beach! However it does get crowded easy and finding a parking spot can be tough - but there is no fee to park or access the beach!  more »

A secluded hidden gem in the exclusive Sea Cliff neighborhood, surrounded my mega million dollar homes. The water is freezing most of the year, the beach is small and grainy, but the views are spectacular. This is an intimate, cozy, and windy place that is very romantic. Parking is limited, and it can be very cold here, so plan ahead. Highly recommended.

My dad used to take us here on nice days, now it holds fond memories of a better time. I remember him young, healthy, happy and alive.

I loved this beach! I get there around sunrise it was quite then and I got some beautiful shots there. Truly it's a hidden gem and I liked it better than Baker beach.

So called because all the Chinese laborers were camped here, China Beach is a hidden gem in the Richmond District. It's not usually warm enough to wear a bathing suit, but if you find yourself in SF on a hot day, come here and you will be richly rewarded.

Quickie: + Secluded, romantic, must-see hidden gem of a seaside beach + Nice view from the side of the Golden Gate Bridge + Date spot! --- Location/Parking: There is a lot you can park in and then you have to walk down a flight of stairs or down the inclined road. From there it's just you and the sand flanked by some rocky cliffs with the Golden Gate Bridge on the far right in the background. This place looked gorgeous at sunset and there was a proposal being set up as we were leaving (very romantic-esque). It wasn't crowded that Friday evening so it'd make a good date spot. Verdict: If I'm back in the area, would definitely include this on my list of brief stops around sunset. What a view.

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
