China Beach, San Francisco

(4.4/5 based on 55+ reviews on the web)
Swim, kite surf, or simply relax at China Beach. The shallow water provides a safe place for kids and less experienced swimmers to safely enjoy themselves. Bring food to prepare on one of the outdoor grills and picnic tables. Kite surfing enthusiasts can take advantage of the wide shoreline and good winds here. More secluded than others in the area, this beach offers a quiet getaway from crowds. No kiosks or shops--but you get a great view of the Golden Gate Bridge on a clear day. • Quickie: + Secluded, romantic, must-see hidden gem of a seaside beach + Nice view from the side of the Golden Gate Bridge + Date spot! --- Location/Parking: There is a lot you can park in and then you have to walk down a flight of stairs or down the inclined road. From there it's just you and the sand flanked by some rocky cliffs with the Golden Gate Bridge on the far right in the background. This place looked gorgeous at sunset and there was a proposal being set up as we were leaving (very romantic-esque). It wasn't crowded that Friday evening so it'd make a good date spot. Verdict: If I'm back in the area, would definitely include this on my list of brief stops around sunset. What a view.
  • Very beautiful view of the Golden Gate Bridge and the ocean. You can swim, but the water is a bit cold. Also there is a free parking.
  • Not often crowded, this has a great view of Golden Gate Bridge, the light house across the bay, and the Pacific. If you're adventurous, I've seen people climb the rocky areas. Locally, this is one of my favorite beaches. You can see whatever you want - including the sunset.
  • This place is a hidden gem, but don't head down on a cold day! Bring some meat to grill; there are some truly massive grills available; not the little ones you find at most parks. If it's not your birthday or some other holiday, make up an excuse!
  • Much quieter spot and more private than Baker Beach. That being said, it doesn't seem to be as clean of a beach. I saw more trash and such tossed around. The surrounding neighborhood makes for a really nice stroll. It's nice to pretend I could maybe someday own one of those houses.
