Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.

  • Where do I start? The fabric range is awesome. Walls of fabric in so many colours. If you want blue, there are dozens of shades. The same with every colour in the rainbow. Linen, cotton, wool, lace, l...  more »

  • Amazing selection and super helpful staff. I needed a cord for my wedding dress and they made it happen, fast. If I knew how to sew I'd definitely go there again :)
  • Four floors of all things textile. Things are pricey, but they have hard to find prints and fabrics. They also have ribbons, appliques, feathers, buttons, and rhinestones. A tiny bit of notions. Service varies from helpful and friendly, to aloof-- but most are friendly. Some staff are more knowledgeable than others. They don't have a modern system, unfortunately, so if you want to go back for something you best have a swatch. Having the tag information means nothing apparently. Also a bummer that they don't have online shopping. Very old fashioned style business, but worth a visit for the unique finds.
  • The most incredible collection of quality fabrics in one place. The staff is very knowledgeable and helpful. Spent 5 hours shopping on my last visit.
  • So interesting. This place has it all in fabrics and just for the fun of it, if you're a Harry Potter fan, you will love this place because of the building itself.
  • Incredible selections on fabrics. You'll go crazy with such beautiful colors and design such a wide fantastic selection you won't know where to begin.
