Baker Beach, San Francisco

4.6
#7 of 65 in Outdoors in San Francisco
While it remains too dangerous for swimming, Baker Beach is one of the best spots in the city to take in views of San Francisco's iconic bridge. This public beach stretches along the Pacific just northwest of the city, which makes it easily accessible by various modes of transportation. Keep in mind that the northernmost section of the beach tends to attract nudists. Park at the confluence of 25th Ave and Seacliff, then hike down to the Beach. A mildly difficult return, but what a day! Crashing waves and a spectacular sight of the world's most famous bridge. To av...  more »

Located on the coast of San Francisco, to the southwestern corner of the Presidio, Baker Beach is a beach quite long and wild (except for errors there are establishments, it's all free, with some areas clothing-free). This sandy beach, in the shadow of the Golden Gate Bridge, offers a stunning view of the Pacific Ocean, as well as on the aforementioned Golden Gate even though when we were there (on a Sunday in early July) the bridge was wrapped up in the evening by a fog which left a glimpse of just a few parts (it seems to be quite frequent condition in summer). At the beach you can reach easily by car, there is ample parking out front, while I didn't see public toilets or other facilities (but maybe there are). To what I've read is reached also by public transport. Not overly crowded despite it being Sunday, but as said, it wasn't a particularly sunny day. Attention to dive, we are in the ocean and there are lifeguards and, from what I've read, sometimes water quality isn't the best. Anyway if you have time come, you won't regret it. Luca

In the summer months the city experiences a lot of fog. It was kind of cool to see the bridge emerging from the fog. Overall, it offers a great view of the bridge! There is also a sand ladder in the m...  more »

Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.
