Where to stay in San Francisco

From inexpensive hostels in quiet residential areas to high-end hotels near the city center, San Francisco has accommodations for every budget. Key consideration is what kind of neighborhood you want to stay in. You'll find luxury hotels in Union Square, which has prime shopping, is near theaters, and is on the cable car line. Many hotels are in the northeastern portion of the city, near the tourist-driven neighborhoods of Chinatown and Fisherman's Wharf, both easily explored on foot. To get away from the tourist crowds, consider the smaller inns and family-run bed and breakfasts in some of the city's more charming neighborhoods, such as Noe Valley or Pacific Heights. There are also boutique hotels scattered around town. Avoid staying in the Tenderloin. If you plan to have a car with you, ask about parking availability and fees. Parking is often difficult and expensive.

  • The guy who took us for the tour was fun and he clearly enjoyed his work, and I really liked the way he talked about beer and its creation! The beer tasting was the best part though, we had 6 beers ea...  more »
  • Friendly and knowledgeable host and a great opportunity to taste some of the brewery's product range. Not far from the centre of downtown, easily accessible and well worth the admission! Put this tour...  more »
  • While this brewery does not have a restaurant or a pub on site, it offers this wonderful tour that takes you from the tuns, to the hop room, to the cellar to the bottling room. The guide is informativ...  more »

  • I've toured a hundred breweries around the country, and I've never been told I needed reservations at least a week in advance before. I really like anchor steam beer and was excited to check the place out while in town, only to be turned away. Major bummer.
  • A fun way to kick off the weekend. So much history and resilience (rebuilt after 6 fires through the years). Our tour with Braden was fun and engaging. Certainly a great stop for locals and visitors alike!
  • Stephen our tour director and beer pourer was very informative and helpful. Ryan was very helpful in finding our correct shirt size and beer to purchase. Fun way to kick off the day.
  • My wife and i visit a good number of breweries and we have taken a lot tours, but this one is truly unique. No other US brewery can boast the history of Anchor. And the tour takes full advantage of all of it. Currently, all the beer made for distribution is made in this location. There doesn't appear to be that much from the exterior but they are at least four floors and a basement so there's a lot more here than you'd think. The history is great; the brewing equipment is old and amazing (no computers here!); and our guide, Steven knew the answers to every question. AND the tasting at the end is pretty darn great, too. This such a cool and different place, I recommend it for every beer lover.
  • I've been on a lot of brewery tours and this is one of the best. Informative and interesting tour followed by an extensive tasting.
