Where to stay in San Diego

Offering accommodations at a wide range of price levels, San Diego is one of the easiest cities to stay in, regardless of whether you're simply passing through or hanging around for a long vacation. If you don't mind splurging, book your stay at a luxury downtown hotel or a lavish bayside resort. You can also rent a spacious private cottage within walking distance of the city's popular beaches. For a more affordable alternative, try a family-friendly hostel or quaint inn in a quiet residential area.

  • Agree with other reviews. This mall looks nice although something is missing. It was very quiet there for a Saturday which was very surprising. Did stumble across a 1 day sale at Macy's which was a pl...  more »

  • As far as open-air malls this is a pretty good one. Stores range from mid-tier to moderately uppity. The food court is lacking, and there aren't any convenient plugs if you need to charge, but that's not really why you're going to a mall. Security keeps a pretty good leash on the overwhelming homeless masses that occupy the nearby area, so you shouldn't get harassed by panhandlers, but if you venture too far away that's another story. There are plenty of good eating options in the nearby area.
  • I love the look of this mall. I went on a Sunday afternoon and it was pretty dead. It is located in downtown San Diego so there is a great deal of homeless population around, but there is security that keeps them from loitering. Overall I think it's a great place to walk around and shop.
  • I work at this mall. It will be going through a renovation soon. Beautiful public space on the Broadway side and a restored theatre space ( The Balboa). Some stores have left but most are still open. Including the anchor store Macy's. There are movie theatres on the top level as well as a comedy club. There is also a great natural foods store, Jimbo's. Check it out.
  • Great shopping area right in the heart of downtown San Diego in Gaslamp. Parking can get a little expensive in the garage if you're there for a long time. I recommend visiting on weekdays after 6pm and find free parking on the street or Sundays when parking on the street is free all day. I visit the 24 Hour Fitness here and they validate your parking for 2 hours (just FYI).
  • Cool shopping area. Variety of shops and eateries to check out. Getting around (upper and lower levels) can be a bit confusing if you're unfamiliar with the place. It's an open mall area but the wind circulates through pretty well. Nice spot altogether.
